On Saturday, August 7th, Sidney Alan Mattson, ‘the man, the myth, the legend’, aged 74, loving husband, father of three, and proud grandfather of eight passed away in Lapeer, Michigan. He was born to Kent and Katherine (née Kline) Mattson on December 15th, 1946, at St. Joseph’s hospital in Pontiac, Michigan. Sid graduated from Lapeer High School in 1965 and earned a degree in dairy science at Michigan State University before joining the Air Force in 1969. He is survived by his wife Martha (née Snoddy), his three children; Kent Mattson (Kristin) of Caledonia, MI, Jennifer Clay (Brent) of Flower Mound, TX, Brian Mattson (Anette) of Voorschoten, The Netherlands, eight grandchildren; Connor, Madeline, Nolan, Emma, Donavan, Lily, Tijs, and Bastian, and three sisters; Heidi Ramirez (David) of Darien, IL, Laurel Hoag (Alex) Hoover, AL, and Karen Bertl (Jeff) of Omaha, NE.
Sid worked as a loan officer at Michigan National Bank in Port Huron, the Farm Credit Services in Caro, and for 19 years at Eastern Michigan Bank in Croswell. He strove to offer a variety of agricultural financing and loan options tailored to meet the unique needs of a variety of farm operations. As many farmers knew, whether you needed new equipment or livestock financing, Sid was there to help.
When he wasn’t criss-crossing the thumb of Michigan serving the agricultural community, he was the consummate family man. Sid loved spending time with his wife of 51 years, diligently cared for his mother, and never missed an opportunity to play cards with any relatives willing to suffer his banter. He provided unconditional love to his children and grandchildren and relished opportunities to spend time and be silly with them whenever and wherever he could.
Sid never forgot his Yooper roots and enjoyed spending time in the less populated corners of Iron County. He spent much of the year stocking up on supplies for his annual trip to Trails End where he would rendezvous with friends and family members every November. Sid always looked forward to these trips where he could feign hunting deer in order to fill his days with cribbage, euchre, and poker games, hearty meals, banter, and an occasional nap. Stories of his experiences at hunting camp always brought a smile to his face no matter how many years removed.
An avid sports fan, Sid always cheered on his Michigan State Spartans and the Detroit Tigers. He was particularly fond of the Spartan football team and as a season ticket holder he regularly haunted the banks of the Red Cedar every autumn. Sid and his wife could be found at nearly every Spartan home game for over 20 years, always bringing along friends or family with their extra tickets. Whether faced with inclement weather, insurmountable deficits, or other inconveniences, he always supported his teams. The most important of these teams were always those which included his children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. He never missed an opportunity to cheer them on at youth sports fields and gyms near and far.
After retiring in 2013 as the vice president of commercial loans at Eastern Michigan Bank, Sid took advantage of every opportunity to spend time with family and friends. Whether in Michigan, Texas, or Europe, he doted upon his grandchildren and they all appreciated their experiences with him. When he wasn’t traveling or cheering on his sports teams you could find Sid tending his bird feeders, working his garden plot, or continuing to serve his community by working as a local election volunteer.
Sid loved to joke, tell stories, and spend time with those he loved. He treasured the many moments he had with friends and family throughout his life. Sid was fortunate to be under the loving care of his devoted wife Martha, who provided steadfast care at home during his final months.
Cremation has been entrusted to Muir Brothers Funeral Home, Lapeer. Sid’s memorial service will be 11:00am Saturday September 11, 2021 at the First Presbyterian Church, Lapeer. The family will receive friends and family the hour prior to the service, at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are encouraged to Heartland Hospice. Condolences and memories may be left at MuirBrothersLapeer.com. |
