Dr. Alton C. Smith, 90, died April 24, 2021 at his home in Grand Blanc, Michigan. A private family celebration will be officiated by Rev. Bob Roberts (son-in-law) at Sunset Hills in Flint, Michigan.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Assemblies of God Bible Institute of Belize in memory of Alton through New Life Christian Fellowship, 2237 East Reid Road, Grand Blanc, Michigan.
Alton was born on January 21, 1931, in Novi Township, Michigan to Alton Presley Smith and Alzona Grey Smith.
Alton held a Doctoral degree from Michigan State University in Post-secondary Accreditation, a Masters of Science in Education from University of Michigan in Community College Administration, a Bachelor’s degree from University of Michigan in History, and a Diploma in Pastoral Studies and Missions from Eastern Bible Institute. He spoke English, French and Hatian Creole.
In 1952, Alton married Gladys Marie Farrand. They were married until her death in February of 1975. They served the Lord together as Pastors in Hillsdale, Cadillac, and Boyne City, Michigan. Alton worked for IBM in Flint, MI, taught at numerous schools within the Flint Public School system, was an instructor at Central Michigan University in Mt. Pleasant, and served as principal at Byron High School in Bryon, Michigan. From 1964-1968, Alton was the Eighth Ward Commissioner for the City of Flint.
In 1976, Alton married Norma Youngs McGee and together they served as missionaries with the Assemblies of God from 1977-2001. In the course of their years of service, they worked together in West Africa, Haiti, Belize, and numerous islands in the Caribbean. Upon returning to the U.S. they taught at Trinity Bible College in Ellendale, North Dakota.
In June of 2001, they officially retired and moved to Lakeland, Florida, where they continued to be involved in their local church, New Life Church, and served as directors of Senior Ministries.
In retirement, Alton also served as a consultant for the Kosova Christian Education Project, was a Chaplain for the Polk County Sheriff’s Department and authored a book titled, “The Pilgrim's Future”.
Throughout his life, he enjoyed teaching Sunday School with a focus on eschatology (the last days), wood-working, swimming, archery, ice skating, writing, and family camping trips.
In June of 2019, Alton and Norma moved to Michigan to be near their children.
Alton was preceded in death by his parents, wives; Gladys Marie Smith, and Norma O. Smith, siblings; Patricia Sebastian Youngs, Gerald Smith, and son-in-law, Erich Nestler.
Left to cherish Alton’s memory are his children; Rachel McGee, Barb (Rob) Cody, Joy Nestler, Alton (Barb) Smith, Brenda (Doug) Lee, Beverly (Bob) Roberts, and Bonnie (Dennis) Saglimbene as well as 20 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great grandchildren.
Alton faithfully served the Lord throughout his life.
