James S. Wood, Sr. "Woody"

James S. Wood Sr., affectionately known as "Woody," age 84, of Bancroft, passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, July 30, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family.

Born on January 30, 1942, in Holland, Michigan, Woody was the son of Louis and Zulene (Callahan) Wood and a member of the Midland High School Class of 1960. He dedicated his career to the road construction industry, helping build and improve Michigan's roads and infrastructure as a truck driver. A proud member of Teamsters Local 247, he also served as a respected union steward, advocating for his fellow workers and earning the respect of colleagues throughout his career. Even after 27 years of retirement, Woody was a member of the Michigan Teamsters Joint Council #43 Retirees Club, Chapter #1.

Woody was an enthusiastic sports fan who rarely missed an opportunity to cheer on the Detroit Tigers, Detroit Lions and Michigan State Spartans. He found joy in following his favorite teams, but his greatest happiness came from spending time with his family and sharing in their lives.

On June 14, 1975, Woody married Carol Harter at the First Congregational Church, in Bancroft. Together they shared more than 51 years of love, laughter, and unwavering devotion. Their life together centered on family, creating countless cherished memories with their children, grandchildren, and great-granddaughter.

Woody will be deeply missed by his beloved wife, Carol Wood; his children, Connie (Dave) Roberts, James Jr. (Shannon) Wood, Kara (Louis Vinson III) Wood, Michelle Kalmbach, and Leslie (Michael) Bryant; his grandchildren, Jimmy III, Joseph, Tyler, Haylee, Michael James, and Carol Ann; his great-granddaughter, Madilynn; and many other cherished relatives and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Connie Sukenik.

Woody will be remembered for his steadfast devotion to his family, his loyalty to his friends, his strong work ethic, and the quiet strength that guided him throughout his life. His kindness, generosity, and unwavering support of those he loved will remain a lasting legacy for all who had the privilege of knowing him.

In accordance with Woody's wishes, no memorial service will be held.

Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Memorial Healthcare Cancer Center Fund or the Alzheimer's Association (Greater Michigan Chapter).
