SALIM, DEBORAH G. - Lovingly known as Deb, passed away surrounded by her family, at the age of 69 on September 7, 2023 at Hurley Medical Center after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.
Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 13, 2023 at St. George Orthodox Church, 5191 Lennon Road, Flint, the Very Reverend Father Joseph Abud officiating, with visitation beginning at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church.
Burial Evergreen Cemetery.
Visitation 2 p.m. – 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road. A Nurses Honor Guard will assemble at 7 p.m. Tuesday and a Triasagion Service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday evening at the funeral home.
Deb was born in Flint, Michigan on January 24, 1954 to Frank and Mary Salim, who preceded her in death.
She graduated from Grand Blanc High School in 1972. She received a Diploma from Hurley School of Nursing in 1976 and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from the University of Michigan Flint in 1981.
Deb worked at Hurley Medical Center for 40 years in several specialties including orthopedics, the burn unit, and the pediatric and neonatal intensive care units, retiring in 2014.
She taught the Pediatric Advanced Life Support Program at Hurley for many years. Deb was an avid sports fan, and enjoyed playing softball, racquetball and golf.
She volunteered at St. George Orthodox Church and the Flint Soup Kitchen. Deb raised and cherished her four dogs, also known as her “kids” - Yorkies, Winston and Watson and Shih Tzus, Caden and Callie.
Deb is survived by her three sisters; Nancy (Michael) Silpoch, Linda (Matthew) Shadeed, and Sharon (Richard) Ballreich. She was a devoted aunt to Michelle (Joshua), Brian (Stephanie), Justin, Clayton (Nicole), Nicholas, Spencer, Jordan, Francesca, Connor, Gracyn, Brendan, Lauren, and Easton. She was also preceded in death by her dear friend “sister”, Marilyn Ames.
Deb’s family would like to thank the Hurley Medical staff and Dr. Basim Towfiq for her loving care.
In lieu of flowers, Deb requested that donations be made to St. George Orthodox Church School or Shriner’s Hospital for Children.
