Von was born in Strawberry, Arkansas on January 13, 1935, son of the late Virgil Ballard and Ester (Sneed) Ballard Massey. He married Barbara on March 12, 1960, at Richfield Church of the Nazarene in Otisville, MI. They were happily married for 57 years. January 16th marked Von’s passing, which was also the birthday of his late wife, Barbara. This marked the final chapter of their love story.
Von grew up in Grange, Arkansas and attended Cave City Schools. He moved to Michigan to begin his 30-year career with General Motors. During this time, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served his country. In 1960, he married Barbara, and they raised their family in Davison. When the decision was made to add landlord to his many responsibilities, it became a family endeavor. In October 1986, Von retired from G.M. and travelled the U.S. with their 5th wheel trailer. They finally settled in Las Vegas, Nevada for the winter months until they were blessed with their 5 grandchildren.
Von was a devoted husband, dad and grandpa. He lived a simple life, was a self-made and self-taught man, worked hard and instilled a strong work ethic in his family. When asked about retirement, his response was, “I never stopped working and that is what keeps me going.” He was a man of very few words and believed a handshake cemented a deal. The “I Love You’s”, hugs, and “I’m Proud of You’s”, came as the grandchildren were born, but anyone who ever met our dad knew that his family was his proudest accomplishment.
Von is survived by 3 daughters, Judith Ballard, Nancy Ballard and Susan (Mark) Lutz; 5 grandchildren, Charles and Gregory Smith, Douglas, Kimberlee and Victoria Lutz; 2 brothers residing in Arkansas, Robert (Donna) Ballard and Lester (Ann) Ballard; many other loving family members and good friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents and brothers, Glen Ballard and E.W. Ballard.
