VAN PATTEN III, Charles Douglas – of Davison, MI, age 80, passed away Sunday, July 2, 2023. Cremation has taken place. A Private Memorial Service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. John’s Northwestern Military Academy, in Charles’s memory.
Charles was born in Bracebridge, Ontario, Canada on September 28, 1942, son of the late Charles and Bethany (Newitt) Van Patten II. He married Gayle Novak on December 21, 1991. Charles proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy for 4 years and 2 years in the reserves. Charles had a lifelong love of wooden boats which he partnered with his father, well-known architect Douglas Van Patten II. He also shared a family love for Morgan Cars. Charles attended West Lawn School of Boat Design after graduating from Thomas Aquinas in Princeton New Jersey.
Charles is survived by his wife, Gayle Novak Van Patten; children, Alan (Mari) Panter, Leesa (Clint) Lee and Bethany (Stephen) Girard; grandchildren, Kelsey (Alex) Hughes, Kathryn Panter, Erin Panter, Erika (Kyle) Belill, Jonathan (Erin) Holmes, Kevin Schepler and Scott Schepler; 7 great grandchildren; sister, Dr. C. Diana (Jervis Handy Webb) Van Patten Webb; nephew, Jervis Van Patten (Holly) Webb; great niece, Alyssa M. Webb; special nephew, Tony (Tish) Novak; many other loving family members and good friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.
