John Thomas Rice, age 80, died on Friday, December 30, 2022, surrounded by his family. John was born on August 12, 1942, in Bay City, MI, one of three children of Eldon and Rachael (McCann) Rice.
John married Barbara Jean Pnacek in Midland, MI, on August 7, 1965. They had two children: daughter Deborah Cain (Gerald) of Midland, MI, and son Matthew John Rice (Craig Samuels) of Chicago, IL. His greatest joy was his granddaughter Rachael Anne Cain.
John served six years in the US Navy and was a member of the American Legion and Loyal Order of Moose. He was a rural route carrier for the United States Postal Service for 25 years, retiring in 2012. He loved golf on any day that ended in “y,” was an avid pool player in many leagues, and, in his younger years, he enjoyed riding his BMW motorcycle. What brought him joy, in his later years, was Texas two-step dancing with the love of his life, his wife of 57 years, Barb.
John is also survived by his sister Kayanne Pnacek (Robert); his sister-in-law Margaret Benjamin both of Midland, MI; his cousin Sondra Rice Newman (George) of Tucson, AZ; his sisters-in-law Mary Anne Chritz, Lucille Smith (Gerald), Gail Pnacek and Sandy Pnacek, and brothers-in-law Edward Pnacek, Charles Pnacek, Michael Pnacek (Janice Putt), Patrick Pnacek. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother William Rice; his sister-in-law and brother-in-law Agnes and Laurence Novak, brothers-in-law Leonard Chritz, Frank Pnacek Jr., Stanley Pnacek, Henry Pnacek, and Joseph Pnacek.
Visitation will be held on Monday, January 2, 2023, from 4:00-7:00 PM at the Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral Home, 1200 W. Wheeler St., Midland, MI. Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, January 3, 2023, at 11:00 AM at St. Brigid of Kildare Catholic Church, 207 Ashman St., Midland, MI. John's family will start greeting guests at the church at 10:00 AM.
Memorial contributions in John’s name may be made to St. Brigid of Kildare Catholic School. |
