GUERRA, Reuben

After a long and courageous battle with Cancer, Reuben Martin Guerra passed away into the arms of Our Lord on July 30, 2021. Reuben was born January 30, 1972, to Refugio and Celia Guerra in Flint, MI, as the last of the fourteen siblings. Reuben received the Sacraments of the Catholic Church at Our Lady of Guadalupe in Flint and attended Luke M. Powers Catholic High School, where he graduated in 1990. While in high school, Reuben was very actively involved with choir and musical theatre, both of which served as the foundation of an unmatched talent that Reuben would hone for the rest of his life. After high school, Reuben attended the University of Michigan, which solidified his love for U of M sports – especially football. On Sundays, you could always find Reuben cheering on his Detroit Lions, in spite of their record at the time. Reuben worked several jobs in different fields including Don Pablo's and Leidal & Hart but his professional life and career truly began when he joined GE as a field engineer working within nuclear reactors.
Reuben is survived by his fiancée, Margaret Powers Chisholm, their children, Max, Roman, Cash, Jackson and Paige; sisters, Rose (David) Gonzalez, Lydia ( Richard) Reyes, Cecelia Rice, Ramona (Daniel) Filipovich, Marcella (Matthew) Forsleff, Benita ( Drew) Holifield and Victoria Guerra; brothers, Lionel (Marlee) Guerra, Phillip (Michele) Guerra, Christopher (Allison) Guerra, Eduardo (Heather) Guerra and John Guerra. Reuben also leaves many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and his many, many friends from school, work, and followers of his musical performances.
Reuben was preceded in death by his father, Refugio M. Guerra, mother, Celia Guerra, sisters, Veronica Long and Bibiana Waters, grandparents, Felipe and Juanita Guerra, Arturo Delgado and Manuela Barrera, brothers-in-law, Michael Cramer and Charles Rice and his niece Andrea Rice.
Reuben’s family wishes to express their sincere gratitude for the medical team at Ascension Genesys Hospital and his physicians, Dr. Ramy Kurdi, Dr. Roland Tindle and Dr. Madan L. Arora; as well as the prayers and offerings of support from so many family, friends, former schoolmates and workmates.
Words cannot begin to express the appreciation the family has for the love, support, compassion, and care that Margaret gave to Reuben. From the first moment he was diagnosed with cancer, Margaret has been unbelievably strong, always making sure that whatever was needed was given. Her unconditional love, despite the tremendous obstacles Reuben faced, left the family in awe of her strength and will to support him. They will never forget the many times she put her life on pause to comfort Reuben.
Reuben was beyond unique. He was the most charismatic person anyone has ever met. His singing, piano playing, smiles, jokes, and playful pranks never failed to crack up whomever was lucky enough to be in the audience. The love for his children could never be overstated. He. Loved. His. Kids. He will forever remain in their hearts, never forgotten. As much as Reuben loved his family, he loved his work brothers as well. They would spend weeks and months together, which solidified their unique bond of brotherhood as only they can understand.
To those of you that followed Reuben’s journey with cancer, his family sincerely thanks you. He was forever grateful that his family, friends, friends of friends and complete strangers would rally to help him in his times of need. In his later years, Reuben found a deep sense of comfort watching the birds flying into the feeders that he had set up in his backyard. Whenever you see wild birds, think of Reuben. He told his family he’d come back as an oriole, so any time you see one, you’ll know it's Reuben stopping by to say hello and sing a little song for whomever is lucky enough to be in the audience.
A Mass of Resurrection and a Celebration of Life gathering will be held at a future date.
