Fred was born in Flint, MI on February 2, 1937, son of the late Frederick and Geraldine (Whitney) Burkhardt. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Janice Burkhardt; 4 children, Stacy (Larry) Moyer, Marianne (Mark) Schlaud, Janet Burkhardt and Andy (Michelle) Burkhardt; daughter-in-law, Martha Burkhardt; 8 grandchildren, Jennifer, Michael, Steven, David, Francis, Benjamin, Paul and Adam; 10 great-grandchildren; brother, Marvin Burkhardt; many other loving family members and good friends. He was preceded in death by his son, Frederick Burkhardt and his beloved dog, Hank.
For over 40 years, Fred dedicated himself to the craft of residential and commercial painting, earning the respect and admiration of his peers and clients alike. His meticulous attention to detail and unwavering work ethic were hallmarks of his career, and he took great pride in a job well done. Outside of his professional life, Fred was an avid outdoorsman. He loved hunting and spending time in nature, where he found peace and adventure. His love for tinkering and fixing things was well-known—whether in his garage or around the house, Fred had the talent and tenacity to repair anything. If Fred couldn't fix it, it was thrown away. He also had a special fondness for buying tractors, a hobby that brought him both joy and pride. Fred's greatest joy, however, came from spending time with his family. He cherished every moment with them, whether it was a quiet evening at home or a fun-filled gathering. Fred's legacy will live on through his family, friends, and the countless lives he touched. He will be remembered for his kindness, his strong work ethic, and his ability to always find a solution, “I’ll tell you what I’m going to do”.
