Died: 12/18/2022
Age: 95
Community: Bradenton, FL

Franz Bernhard Glauer, 95, of Bradenton, Florida, died December 18, 2022.

He was born in Rosenberg, Germany. He became a skilled tool and die maker at his father’s machine shop. They made, repaired and sold farm equipment. His father had several employees and apprentices who lived with his family. Franz completed his apprenticeship in 1944, and then had to join the German Navy. He was 17.

After the war, Franz found work as an electrician to rebuild the German grid. Franz was never able to return to his childhood home, as it was located in East Germany close to the Polish border. He did manage to get his mother and siblings out of East Germany, and they arrived penniless via a horse and wagon. Times were very hard for the family.

Franz arrived in Detroit, MI, in 1957. He was recruited by Ford automakers as tool and die craftsmen were needed. Later in his career, he traveled to various GM auto factories to troubleshoot malfunctioning equipment, and to recommend corrective action. Franz retired from General Motors in 1987, and every two years thereafter, purchased a new Cadillac, his favorite car.

Franz was also a skilled carpenter, and loved to build furniture. He also loved to garden and his flowers were his pride and joy. His dress was impeccable. The women in his life loved to go shopping with him because he had an eye for fashion and could always spot a good bargain.

He was preceded in death by his brother Paul (in WWII), his parents, Viktor and Helene (Auras), first wife Martha (Baumann), sister Stefania (Glowalla), sister Margarete (Spallek), and second wife of 39 years, Hedwig Klaus.

Surviving is his younger brother, Viktor (wife Gerta), youngest sister Elfrieda (Horst) Schneider, daughter Mary Ann Costello, granddaughter Emily, stepdaughters Constance McFarland, Frances Fairman, Deborah Weisenberg, and Catherine O’Brien, several nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews.
