ASHBURY (Ackerman), Margaret “Peg” Grace – Age 96, passed away on July 17, 2014, at her home. A memorial service in celebration of her life will be held at 10:00 am Friday, August 8, 2014, at Swartz Funeral Home, 1125 W. Hill Road. She was born in Grand Blanc, August 27, 1917, the daughter of Thomas Mogford Ackerman and Alma Pearl Losee Ackerman. She was the salutatorian of the Grand Blanc High School, Class of 1935. In 1941, she married Thomas Wilson Ashbury; they were married for 61 years before his death in 2002.
Margaret was completely devoted to her family and to caring for others. A member of Woodside Church for sixty years, she was recognized as their Woman of the Year for her efforts with the 39 Club, Bereavement Committee, Scholarship Fund and various other roles, including many years as a kindergarten Sunday School teacher. Peg coordinated hundreds of meals and special events from the church kitchens. She co-piloted thousands of highway miles to support American Red Cross blood deliveries throughout the Michigan Thumb area. Peg sponsored many children through Christian organizations and sent personal letters to each child regularly, written in her impeccable penmanship. Among her fondest times were those spent at her cottage on Glen Lake, surrounded by the antics of her extended family. Her family will forever remember her trust in Vernor’s ginger ale as a cure, her perfect pie crusts and her cereal mix. She enjoyed fresh flowers, red cardinals, birch trees and anything the same shade as orange sherbet.
Surviving are: daughter Hope (Jack) Laitala of Empire; son Thomas C. “Tim” (Tina) Ashbury of Clio; grandchildren Jill (Craig) Russo of Windermere, Florida; Megan (Jeff) Melinat of Richmond, Virginia; Todd (Brandy) Ashbury of Traverse City; Brooke (Andy) Voto of Waterford; Eric Laitala of Marina del Rey, California; Andrew Dangel of Traverse City; Neil (Gina) Adams of Davison; Chad Adams of Washington State; Rachel (Mickey) Vaughn of Texas; twelve great-grandchildren; special daughter-in-law Linda Dangel; sister, Joyce Bartels of Haslett; special nephew, Jon Wadsworth and special niece, JoAnn Wilkinson and other nieces and nephews.
