Barroso, Rafaela Lopez of Flushing, formerly of Detroit, age 81, passed to eternal life peacefully on Friday, January 1, 2016. Funeral Mass will be 11 a.m. Saturday, January 9, 2016, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, Flint. Fr. Gary McInnis will officiate. Entombment will follow at New Calvary Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be 1-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Friday at Rossell Funeral Home. A rosary will be prayed 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to The Legion of Mary at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church.
Rafaela was born in Guanajuato, Mexico on October 24, 1934, the daughter of the late Macario and Asencion Lopez, the eldest daughter of ten children. She married Enrique Barroso, who preceded her in death. Rafaela studied Business Administration in Mexico. She helped her father with the family business of a news stand and lottery retail. Rafaela and her infant daughter, Maria, immigrated to the USA to join her husband where they both made an impact on bilingual education in Detroit Public Schools. She was an avid supporter of the United Farm Workers. A devoted homemaker, she was proud of her Mexican culture and heritage, she shared and taught her children and grandchildren the culture and traditions. Rafaela returned to the work force at Webster Elementary School as a noon hour aide and worked to eventually become the school's head secretary. She taught folkloric dancing to students at the elementary school. Many who are now adults continue the legacy in local dance troops. Rafaela received her GED at Western High School by attending adult education classes in the evenings. She was the Valedictorian for her commencement held at Cobo Hall. Rafaela retired from the Board of Education and moved to Flushing to help raise her granddaughter, Monica. She was an active catechist at Ste. Anne de Detroit and for the last 20 years at Our Lady of Guadalupe parish in Flint. A Dama Catolica at Ste. Anne's parish and a member of The Legion of Mary at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church.
Rafaela is survived by her sister, Maria de la Luz Lopez; brother, Pascual Lopez; sister-in-law, Sabina Hernandez; six children, Maria Guadalupe (Travis Ross), Enrique II (Nanette Williams), Ricardo, Laura, Joseph (Deicy Suarez), and Cristina. She will forever be remembered as “Mama Grande” by her fourteen grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and other relatives in the states and Mexico. |
