BADAR, Norbert S. – Of Swartz Creek, formerly of Flint, age 89, died Thursday, January 2, 2014, surrounded by his loving family at Gentiva Hospice, after suffering a stroke.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 7, 2014 at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, 2415 Bagley Street, Flint, Father Tom Firestone officiating. Mr. Badar will be at the church from 10 a.m. Tuesday until the time of the Mass.

Visitation 2-8 p.m. Monday at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road. A Prayer Service will be held at 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Cremation will take place following the Mass.

Norb was born in Cleveland, Ohio on December 28, 1924, to John and Wanda (Krajewski) Badarzynski and grew up in the St. Barbara Parish neighborhood, where, from an early age, he helped to make kielbasa in the family meat market. He was a resident of Flint since 1951.

He graduated from Cathedral Latin and joined the Army Air Force at the age of 17. He was trained as a fighter pilot and was in the service for two years.

He attended Baldwin Wallace College, graduated from Eastern Michigan University and earned a Master’s Degree from Michigan State University.

Mr. Badar began his teaching and coaching career at Flint Northern High School in 1951, which lasted 40 years.
On August 22, 1953 Norbert married Mary Ann Shanks, and they just celebrated their 60th anniversary.

He was a member of St. John Vianney Catholic Church, where he was a Communion Minister.

Norb had a lifelong love of track and field; as an athlete, coach and mentor; receiving many honors and awards.

Surviving are wife, Mary Ann;

children, Michael,
Anne (Mitch) Aiello and Margaret (Ned) Riedel;

grandchildren, Mary, Catherine, Ian, Sean, Annie and Martha;
many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by children, Stephen, Christopher, Philip and Cynthia; his parents; 3 brothers and 2 sisters.
