Kathleen was born in Goodrich, MI on June 30, 1940, daughter of the late Francis and Nina (Myers) Brokaw. Kathleen was very proud of the fact she grew up on a farm and attended a country school. That background shaped her life as a mother, teacher, and grandmother. Her “stories” were legendary and long-winded; children groaned, and students rolled their eyes. She felt justified because there was always a moral to the story.

Kathleen was a member of MEA, NEA, MHSAA, MITCA, ATOM, and Delta Kappa Gamma, MU Chapter. She was a member of 4-H – sewing and livestock, and a founding member of Future Teachers of America chapter at Davison High School. Kathleen attended Goodrich United Methodist Church and enjoyed being a member of the choir for many of those years.

Kathleen attended kindergarten through 7th grade at Herrick School, and graduated from Davison High School, Class of ’58 where she served on the reunion committee for many years with lifelong friend, Sonny Tenny Thurau. She graduated from CMU and taught in Hemlock, Burton Bendle, and Goodrich High School for 30 years. She “never had a job, I just went to school”, except for the nine years she spent raising her four children whom she treasured. Kathleen served as an official scorekeeper for Goodrich boys and girls basketball teams for 27 and 23 years respectively, was a track and cross-country coach for 15 years, and worked statewide at college and state indoor and outdoor meets for many years.

Kathleen attended five Olympic USA Track Trials with 50 Michigan coaches that provided great memories of cheering on Michigan Olympian athletes. She was proud of receiving the BCAM Friend of Basketball in 2014. Honored by MITCA with service awards, Goodrich School Bell for volunteering, and served as Grand Marshall of the Goodrich Homecoming parade twice. Other pastimes included sewing, reading, and attending grandchildren’s athletic events.
Kathleen was proceeded in death by three great-grandparents, four-grandparents, parents, father of her children, and many friends from track, cross-country, and basketball.

Surviving are sons Timothy (Dana) Schollar, Christopher (Kathi) Schollar, and daughters Mary (Michael) Gray and Jane (David) Terryah; grandchildren Shalina (Darko) Desancic, Taylor (John) Kelly, Riley McQueary, Blake McQueary, Sarah Sims (Andrew), Anna (Aaron) Vanden Berg, Jessica Gray (Nolan), Samuel and Sydnee Terryah; great grandchildren Lilliyana, Alexa, Noella, Legend, Carmen, Cora, Kobe, Blake and Georgia; sister Christine (Dennis) Hollenback and brothers Jon and Bill Brokaw; aunt Maribeth Reigle, cousin Eileen Cross, and many nieces and nephews; special friends The Gary Barns family, childhood friends Sonnie Thurau, Kathy Boyce, and her “fifth” child, Trudy Conlin.

Kathleen’s last days were spent in her home, having lived 2 miles from the high school (since 1967) where she taught and coached for 25 years. The family would like to thank neighbors Bob and Georgia Dixon, Heart to Heart Hospice, and Comfort Care Personal Home Care for always being there and taking such great care of her.

In lieu of flowers, please give to Goodrich United Methodist Church or David’s Faith & Hope for Life Foundation. David was a student of Kathleen’s and died of cancer at the age of 29.
