Leo John VanAgen, known affectionately as Leo, passed away peacefully on September 24, 2023, in Owosso, Michigan. Born on October 9, 1935, in Detroit, Michigan, Leo was a beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather and uncle. His life was marked by a deep love for his family, a strong faith, and a passion for the outdoors.
Leo is survived by his devoted wife of 61 years, Gerry, whom he married on September 8, 1962, at Our Lady of Good Council Catholic Church in Detroit. Their enduring love story is an inspiration to all who know them. He is also survived by his loving children, Carolyn Van Agen, John and Nikki Van Agen, and Marc and Leslie Van Agen. Leo was a proud grandfather to Jack Van Agen, Blair Van Agen, Frank Van Agen and his wife, Jacquelyn, in addition to being a doting great-grandfather to Ford James Van Agen. He also leaves behind his cherished nephews and nieces Hank Van Agen, Lori Van Agen, Keith and Tina Paul, Leslie and Dan Prosser, and Linda Palmer. Leo was predeceased by his parents, Frank and Loretta Van Agen, and his siblings Frank, Cyril, and Catherine.

Leo's professional life was marked by a strong sense of contributing to his community and country. He served in the United States Army and, for over 50 years, was a dedicated member of the St. Mary Catholic Church in Durand and served on their St. Vincent DePaul Society. He also had a strong commitment to education and local government and served on the Byron School Board as well as the Antrim Township Board.

In the 1950s, Leo, and his brothers, began to grow sod which began the Van Agen Sod Farm. The brothers relocated the family business to Bancroft in the mid-sixties where it is still owned and operated by the Van Agen family today. Leo was also an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a loving, faith-filled individual whose love for his family, friends, farming and the outdoors was evident in everything he did. Leo's legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

The Van Agen family will receive family and friends at the Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, Durand Chapel, on Tuesday, October 3rd from 2:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. A funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, October 4th, at the St. Mary Catholic Church in Durand at 11:00 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the St. Mary Catholic Church in Durand or the Byron FFA.
