Shepherd, Earl LaVern “Vern” of Flint, formerly of Flushing, age 97, died Sunday, January 14, 2024, at Majestic Care of Flushing. Funeral Services will be 12 noon Friday, January 19, 2024, at Rossell Funeral Home. Pastor Paul Pfeuffer will officiate. Burial will follow at Sunset Hills Cemetery. Visitation will be 11 a.m. until the time of the service at noon. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to Flushing Presbyterian Church.
Vern was born in Flint, Michigan on April 6, 1926, the son of John and Irene (Callesen) Shepherd. He graduated from Flint Central High School in 1944. He proudly served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Vern married Joyce Taylor on August 7, 1946, in Flint. After 67 years of marriage, she preceded him in death on April 23, 2014. In 1929, Joyce’s family began the Taylor Cartage Company, making deliveries for Sears when it was located in downtown Flint. Earl took over the family business, retiring in 1976. He was a member of the Flushing Lions Club. Together with his wife, they were longtime and active members of Flushing Presbyterian Church and the Youth Fellowship Program. He enjoyed bowling and golf.
Earl is survived by his daughter, Brenda and husband Richard Nyquist; grandsons, Andy and wife Julie Nyquist, Rob Nyquist; and great-grandsons, Justin and Hayden Nyquist. He was preceded in death by his wife; son, Andrew Shepherd; and brothers, Don and Melvin Shepherd.
