She lived in Flint for many years and moved to Clio in 1983. She worked for Yankees Department Store in downtown Flint and later worked for both Michigan Bell and Ameritech from 1966 until her retirement in 1992. She married James E. Hooker on August 4, 1967 and he preceded her in death on January 30, 1999. Ethel was a devout Catholic, and diligently labored at various churches in Genesee County. She served as Pastoral Manager for many years at Sacred Heart Catholic Church and as a certified Eucharistic Minister with St. John Vianney Catholic Church and most recently Saints Charles and Helena Catholic Church. She helped start the North End Soup Kitchen, volunteered at several food banks, helped with Catholic Charities and was a sponsor for many Laotian people seeking citizenship to the United States. When not volunteering, Ethel loved sewing, painting, reading a good book and enjoyed poetry. In their earlier years Ethel and James loved going around the country to show rabbits.
