Jerry Regan Sprague, age 82, of Alma, formerly of Flint, passed away Monday, March 9, 2020 at his home with family by his side. He was born September 17, 1937 in Flint the son of Frank and Veronica (McHale) Sprague. He was a 1955 graduate of St. Matthew High School in Flint and went on to attend the University of Detroit. On November 9, 1984, he married Diane Lynn (Denzer) Nelson in Flint.
Jerry owned and operated Inter-City Trucking in Detroit and S & S Cartage in Flint for many years. In 1985 he moved to Alma and owned Quality Motor Sales. Jerry later started Jer-Den Plastics in Alma, selling the business in 2018 to Jeff Stahl, after 23 years of operation. He also owned Fairview Hills Golf Club in Mio for several years.
Jerry was a past member of the Elks Lodge in Alma and Flint, Knight of Columbus and the Mio Moose Lodge. He was an avid golfer, achieving 3 holes-in-one during his lifetime. He was a past president and member of the Flint Golf Club and Pine River Country Club in Alma. He was a fan of all Michigan sports teams. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alma, now Nativity of the Lord Parish. Jerry spent many years coaching his children in hockey and in his later years, enjoyed volunteering with the children at St. Mary’s School in Alma.
Jerry is survived by his wife of 35 years, Diane Sprague of Alma; six children, Jerry (Marie) Sprague of Ohio, Michael (Shelly Soenen) Sprague of California, Jill Gramz of North Carolina, Steve (Jodie) Sprague of Howell, Steve Nelson of Flint, Andy (Kandace) Nelson of Shepherd; ten grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Thomas Sprague.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, March 13, 2020 at 11 am at Nativity of the Lord Catholic Church, 605 S. Franklin Street, St. Louis, MI with Frs. Loren Kalinowski and David Parsch officiating. Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 12th from 4-8 pm at Lux-Moody-Wolfel Funeral Home, Alma with a Prayer Service to begin at 7:30 pm. Those desiring may make memorial contributions to St. Mary’s School.
