Richard T. Barrett, age 74, of Clearwater, Florida, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 19, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.
Richard was born on October 31, 1951, in Beaumont, Texas, to Richard W. and Bette Barrett. He attended Castle Heights Military Academy in Lebanon, Tennessee, and later Bendle High School before graduating from Grand Blanc High School in Grand Blanc, Michigan.
Richard is survived by his devoted wife, Karen, his high school sweetheart, whom he married in 1972. Together, they shared a love that endured life’s ups
and downs, finding their way back to one another and rebuilding a relationship rooted in love and resilience.
He is survived by his children: his son, Richard Jr.; daughters Morgan (Nicholas) Schomer and Spencer (Logan) Brock; and sons Trent (Christina) and Dayton.
He leaves behind nine beloved grandchildren—Richard III Barrett, Cory Barrett, Reagan Brock, Alexander Schomer, Kennedy Brock, Samantha Schomer, Logan Brock Jr., Sarah Schomer, and Trent Barrett Jr.—each of whom he adored deeply and who brought him endless pride, joy, and love.
Richard is also survived by his siblings and extended family, including sisters-in-law Kim (David) McMorris and Rodney (Teresa) Chervus; Patricia Chervus; nieces Laura Barrett and Sylvia Chervus; and nephew Bradford Barrett.
He was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Meghan Kourtney Barrett; his parents, Bette Benedict and Richard W. Barrett; and his nephew, Brent Barrett Jr., whom he is now joyfully reunited with in heaven.
Richard was a longtime member of the Masonic Lodge in Flint, Michigan, where he became a 32nd Degree Mason and active Shriner, reflecting his deep commitment to service and brotherhood. He found joy and peace on the water as captain of his own boat and will be remembered for his quick wit, humor, and his ability to make light of any situation. He loved country music and dancing, especially to George Strait, Alan Jackson and ABBA. He found joy in life’s simple, meaningful moments. He was known for being able to fix most things himself and took pride in it. A self-described cowboy at heart, he loved a starched shirt, blue jeans, and a good pair of cowboy boots. A man of strong work ethic. Richard mastered the balance of hard work and always making time for fun.
Richard publicly declared the Lord as his Savior at a young age, and throughout his life he relied on his faith in God to carry him through both the good times and the difficult ones.
Richard will be deeply missed and forever cherished by all who knew and loved him.
Services to celebrate and honor Richard’s life will be held on Monday, June 8th at the Chapel in Evergreen Cemetery, 3415 Hill Road, Grand Blanc, Michigan. Visitation will take place from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., followed by a funeral service celebrating his life at 11:00 a.m. Burial will immediately follow. The service will be officiated by Pastor Justin Rose.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made, in his honor, to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America at www.alzfdn.org. |
