Ernest was born on October 26, 1941, the youngest of 12 children to William and Helen (Wenzlick) Birchmeier, and he lived his entire life in his current farm house. The four pillars of Ernie's life were his Faith, his Family, his Friends, and his Farm. These were always sprinkled with an adequate amount of Fun. While still in high school, he took over the operation of the family farm because of his father's health issues. Ernie farmed and raised livestock all of his life. He loved to work the land and watch his crops grow.
Ernie coached "Little League" for many years when his family was younger, he ushered for St. Michael's Church, and he played in their Men's Blooper Ball League. In later years, he enjoyed winter euchre games with friends, going fishing with his sons, and following his grandchildren's sporting events, attending dance recitals, and watching them show animals at various events. Ernie also worked for GM at Buick in Flint for 30 years.
Ernie married his High School Sweetheart, Julia "Judy" Bishop on October 6, 1962. Together they raised a family of ten, including their daughters, Tammy (John Copes), Teri Ann (Bob Symons); and their sons, Tony (Mary Beth), Tim (LeAnn), Ernie Jr., Ted (Tracy), Troy (friend Christi), Tom (Kim), Todd (Leslie), and Torey (Korrie).
Ernie is survived by his wife and children; his grandchildren, Taylor, Trevor, Mikayla, Zachary, Andrew, Emily, Greg, Brad (Courtney), Charleigh, Brady, Cody, Caleb, Cooper, Colton, Samantha, Alexis, Hailey, Hannah, Paige, Trevor, Brooke, Brynne, Alayna, Aubree, Olivia, Dalton, Kennedy, and Carter; his 2 great-grandchildren, Bella and Barrett; his brother, Rupert (Dorothy) Birchmeier; his sisters, Marian Maxa, Dolores Lucius, Marge (Bernie) Korson, and Sister Margaret Mary Birchmeier of the Grand Rapids Dominicans Mission in Chimbote, Peru; his sisters-in-law, Esther Birchmeier, Marion Birchmeier, and Teresa Lucius; his mother in law, Helen Bishop, his other in-laws; Harriett Bishop, Eydie Bishop, Becky and Bill Bodnar, Rick and Sandy Damveld, Jackie Harris, Ed and Diane Bishop, and Bob and Kathy Bishop; as well as many nieces and nephews. Ernie also had many special friends who were of great enjoyment and support throughout his life.
Besides his parents, Ernie is predeceased by Clarence and Betty Birchmeier, Andrew and James Birchmeier, Lucille and Clair Wendling, Clarence Lucius, Josephine and Leonard Lucius, Jane and John Dehmel, and Mike Maxa; and his other in-laws, John, Bernard, Raymond, Cheryl Bishop , and Linda Jordan.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Dominican Sisters Mission in Chimbote, Peru, or to a charity of the donor's choice.
