Slocum, Lon Laverne, age 80, died Monday, December 19, 2022, at McLaren Flint. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, December 27, at Rossell Funeral Home. Fr. Gabriel Bilas will officiate. Burial will follow at Flushing Cemetery. Visitation will be 12-7 p.m. Monday, December 26, at Rossell Funeral Home and 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home until the time of the service at 11 a.m. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners Hospitals for Children at lovetotherescue.org, the St. Labre Indian School, and the St. Joseph Indian School.
Lon was born in Flint, Michigan, on July 1, 1942, the son of Ernest and Helen (Amie) Slocum. He married Natalja Martinjuk on December 23, 1963, in Jackson, New Jersey. Lon served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War as a Seabee. He worked for over 38 years at General Motors as a Skilled Trades Electrician. Together with his wife, they enjoyed collecting model trains, camping together and with the grandkids. Lon also enjoyed golfing, fishing, and especially sitting around the campfire telling stories with family. He liked to build things. Lon never met a stranger and loved talking to everyone he met. He was also recognized as an Honorary Sioux for his support over the years.
He is survived by his children, Vera Ann Martin-Warren, Elizabeth Marie and husband Steven Kekel, Jon Eldon and wife Kim Slocum, Katherine Elaine Slocum, Lon Michael Slocum, Nina Elena Slocum and partner, Jay MacGraw; grandchildren, Tatiana, Anthony, Joseph, Alexandra, Sydney, Jakob, Margaret, Salomae, Nikolai; sisters, Nancy and Paul Corlis, Jeanne Anderson; and brother, Mark and Rose Slocum, sister in-law Virginia Slocum and his faithful furry companion Bob. Lon was preceded in death by his wife, Natalja on June 15, 2012; brother, Larry; brother in-law, Roland Anderson; and his parents.
