SERGENT, Gale M. – of Burton, age 91, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, February 13, 2024. To honor his wishes cremation has taken place, and a private Committal Service will be held in Evergreen Cemetery at a later date.
Gale was born in Flint, MI on August 6, 1932, son of the late James H. and Margaret M. (Manzer) Sergent. His formative years at Davison High School, where he graduated in 1950, were marked by a rich tapestry of experiences. A multi-talented individual, Gale left his mark on the sports field, showcasing his prowess in football, basketball, and baseball. Not only that, but his talents shone through as he played the snare drum in the school band.
Gale married Doris Jean Farmer on November 17, 1952, in Davison, MI. They celebrated 55 years together before she preceded him in death on Sept 23, 2008. Having served in the United States Army, Gale returned home with a sense of duty and commitment. A true craftsman, he contributed to building not just a house, but a home where he and Doris raised five daughters. His career path mirrored a diverse array of experiences – from working on local farms as a teenager to contributing to the construction of the Holloway Reservoir. Following in his father's footsteps, Gale became a mailman before eventually transitioning to a role as a security guard at AC Spark Plug, where he dedicated his time until retirement.
Gale was an active member of Faith Baptist Church for over 50 years; serving as a Deacon, singing in the choir, and was instrumental in the planning of Faith Baptist School. He enjoyed all sports, and liked to camp, fish, and hunt. Gale attended many of his daughters’ concerts and recitals, and probably has heard more scales than any dad should have to endure. A true "Jack of all trades," Gale's spirit of innovation persisted throughout his life. In recent years, his musings about installing a woodburning fireplace reflected his ongoing curiosity and zest for life.
Gale is survived by four daughters, Brenda Jordan, Denise Novak, Linda Sergent, and Bethany (Kevin) Skellenger;10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren with 2 on the way; and his first great-great-grandchild due in the spring; son-in-law, Jim Sears; sister, Nancy Hutt; sister-in-law, Louise Sergent; brother-in-law, Terry VanTress; many other family and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris; daughter, Debra Sears; granddaughter, Allison Skellenger; son-in-law, Gary Jordan; parents, Jim and Margaret Sergent; siblings, Elaine (Fred) Lamb, James “Bud” Sergent, Faith VanTress, and Neil (Carolyn) Sergent.
As he joins the chorus of those who came before, we find solace in the belief that they are reunited, sharing songs and stories.
