Hemingway, Yale H., of Otter Lake, left peacefully in his sleep on March 11, 2022, to join his brother on that Ultimate Vacation to be with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He was 6 days short of his 62nd birthday.
Yale was best known for his love of God and Country. He served in the United States Army as a PFC during the Cold War from 1980-83. Up to the time of Yale’s departure, he continued participation with fellow veterans at the local American Legion, fulfilling his duties with honor and pride. When out in public, he would go out of his way to shake a veteran’s hand, thank them for their service, and welcome them home. Of course, it was always first asked which branch of service they served; he would congratulate army brothers and jokingly tell everyone else that he would “forgive them”. Most of these uplifting interactions spurred military service-related conversation, the longest spontaneous parking lot conversation with someone he did not previously know, lasted over 15 minutes; time noted by his friend that was taking him shopping.
Yale spent 30 years in the landscape business. After retiring, he would keep busy every summer helping to manage neighbor’s yards when they became unable to do the work themselves. He was always willing to lend a hand when someone needed help. From yardwork to car repairs, to helping friends with groceries and transportation, as well as working at the church food distribution, he was there. For years he helped a neighbor with her paper route, too, getting paid only little more than the cost of his gas to do the work. He loved helping his customers and the customers loved him as their carrier. Especially the elderly gentleman that use to come to the end of his very long driveway in a nightgown, nightcap, and slippers, to retrieve his Sunday paper. When Yale found out, the paper was delivered to the door every time from then on. It was the little things he could do for others that made him happiest.
Yale most often had a smile for everyone he met. His dry humor and respect made him oh, so memorable. All the ladies were ‘young ladies’ and the men were ‘sir’. Cashiers were always told “don’t work too hard! If management tries to make ya, just tell ‘em you’re too young!”
Yale was preceded in death by his parents, Max and Phyllis Hemingway, his brother, Max Jr., sister, Janis Carrabia, and brother, Walter Hemingway. He is survived by his children, Naomi and Josh Hemingway, by his sister, Doris Blackmer, brother-in-law James (Janis) Carrabia, and nephews Anthony and Eric Carrabia.
Cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Yale’s life will be April 9, 2022 at Word of God Speak Assembly of God, 4349 Lapeer St., Columbiaville, MI 48421. 10am visitation, 11am service, and lunch to follow. A date for his Military Funeral is to be determined. Arrangements have been entrusted to the angel’s helpers at Jansen Funeral Home, Columbiaville, MI.
