Age 86, of Grand Blanc, Michigan, passed away on Friday, September 4, 2026. In accordance with his wishes, cremation will take place. Expressions of sympathy may be shared with the family on James’ tribute wall at detroitcremationsociety.com.
James Glen Hoag was born on September 11, 1939, in Chardon, Ohio, the son of Glen and Margaret (Petriko) Hoag.
The story of Jim’s life cannot be told without Barbara. They found one another when they were little more than children themselves. They married on March 12, 1960, and from those early years forward they were never truly apart. For more than 70 years, they grew up together, built a home and family together, endured life’s hardships together, and celebrated its blessings together. Their 66 years of marriage were not simply part of Jim’s life story; in many ways, they were the heart of it.
Family remained at the center of Jim’s life. He was a husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather whose presence provided something difficult to put into words until it was gone—a sense that Dad was there and the family was going to be all right. He loved deeply, worried about those he loved, protected them in the ways he knew how, and carried the responsibilities of being a husband and father throughout his life.
That family also included Mia, Jim and Barbara’s beloved dog and faithful companion of 16 years. She was woven into the rhythm of their daily lives and became every bit a part of the home and family they shared.
Those closest to Jim knew that a man’s importance is not measured simply by the years he lived, but by what remains in the people who loved him. His children and grandchildren carry pieces of him forward in their own lives, and the example he set through his devotion to Barbara and his family will remain long after his passing.
For his family, saying goodbye to Jim has brought tremendous grief, but also tremendous gratitude. To be missed this deeply is evidence of how deeply he was loved. His family takes comfort in their faith and in knowing that after a long life of loving, providing, persevering, and caring for those around him, Jim has earned his rest.
James is survived by his beloved wife and lifelong companion, Barbara Hoag; his sons, Darrell Hoag and Kevin (Tracy) Hoag; his daughter-in-law, Sheila Hoag, wife of his late son, James Glen Hoag, Jr.; and his beloved dog, Mia.
He is also survived by his grandchildren, Katherine, James, and Emily (William) Hoag; Gabrielle (Nick) Champine, Gillian (Dylan) Thompson, Isabelle Hoag, and Abigail Hoag; Benjamin (Erin) Hoag, Faye (Diane) Wilds, Rachel (Addison) Root, and Nathan Hoag-Koetsier and his fiancée, Daisy; as well as his great-grandchildren, Lily, Sophia, William, Ryley, and Max, with another great-grandchild expected in March.
He was preceded in death by his beloved son, James Glen Hoag, Jr., who passed away following a battle with cancer, and by his parents, Glen and Margaret (Petriko) Hoag.
Jim will continue to live in the stories his family tells, in the lessons he passed down, and in the people who carry his name, his influence, and his love forward. He will be remembered, he will be honored, and above all, he will be loved. |
