Died: 5/17/2025
Age: 88
Community: Service at Pigeon River Mennonite Church, Pigeon, MI

Freda Jeanette Maust of Pigeon won life's race May 17 while peacefully listening to gospel music. She was born February 11, 1937, the youngest of six children to Jacob and Lydia (Gascho) Swartzendruber. There were twenty-three years between her and her oldest sibling. As a young girl she spent much time with her mom in their flower and vegetable gardens and continued the love of gardening throughout her life. At a young age, she began to look after her elderly parents, which fostered her passion for elder care thus becoming an RN. Freda worked for forty-two years primarily as a geriatric nurse in several facilities. Just before graduating from nurse's training, in June of 1958, Freda married Jim Maust. They lived for a short time in Ann Arbor where they both worked in the University of Michigan hospital before moving onto the farm on Weale Road where they lived for nearly thirty-four years. After retiring from farming, they moved "next door" where she took care of Jim till his passing in 2015.Freda was well known for her generosity and loved to provide her friends and family with cinnamon rolls and her famous “Freda cookies.”
Freda was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Dorothy (Tom) Swartzendruber, brother John (Alta Maust) Swartzendruber, sisters Marie (Elmer) Maust, Marge (Arthur) Maust, and brother James (Arline Nofzinger) Swartzendruber. (Yes, four of the six siblings married into the Maust family!) She was also preceded in death by her great-grandson Timothy Jude Myers.
Freda is survived by her children Cynthia (H. Timothy) Myers of Wilder ID, Barry Maust of Pigeon, MI, Kevin (Dawn Estes-Albrecht) Maust of Gans, OK, six grandchildren, and six great grandchildren.
