PONKEY, GARY R. – “THE LEGEND” of Flint, Michigan, age 55, died Saturday, April 26, 2025.
Visitation will be Sunday, May 4th at 12pm- 8pm and Monday, May 5th at 11am – 1pm at Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 W. Hill Rd. Flint, 48507.
Funeral service will be held at Swartz Funeral Home on Monday, May 5th immediately following visitation at 1pm.
Gary was born in Warren, Michigan on November 5, 1969, the son of the late Joseph and Dolores (Hiler) Ponkey. He grew up in Spring Hills, Florida and Gaylord, Michigan before graduating from Clarkston High School in 1989.
He took pride in his custom designs and dedicated work, serving his customers through the construction company he built himself, GPB Builders, Inc.
Over the years, Gary built and renovated more than just homes-he built lasting relationships. Clients quickly became friends, and friends became family. He had a natural gift for making people feel at ease, always willing to share a story, a laugh, or a helping hand. His word was ironclad, and his customers adored him for his integrity, his work ethic, and the personal pride he poured into every job. He never met a stranger.
He is survived by the love of his life, Jan McLeod; children, Dakota Ponkey and Kylie McLeod; granddaughter Layla; brothers Lawrence (Ron) Ponkey, William Ponkey, and Michael (Joanne Ponkey); several nieces and nephews; several great nieces and great nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Joanne (Don) Campbell and Joyce (David) Gabler; and brother Joseph “Butch” Ponkey, Jr.
Gary had the most vivacious personality and went full steam ahead at everything he did. He constantly taught lessons along the way and would do anything for anyone. He loved hunting and fishing and anything outdoors.
Kylie Grace was his pride and joy. From lacrosse, to hockey, snowboarding, dirt bike riding, fishing and everything in between, he wouldn’t miss it for anything. He was her biggest fan and greatest cheerleader. He always reminded her to “be a good human” and “Watch out for deer!”
To honor Gary’s memory and assist with funeral expenses, memorial contributions can be made to the family.
