It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of Daniel Paul Owen following a courageous battle with cancer. Dan, 58 years old, passed away with his loving family by his side on December 16, 2024. Born in Flint, MI, on July 8, 1966, the son of Niles II and Lee Owen, he will forever be missed.
To know Dan was to be absolutely swept up by his positive energy and deep dedicated loyalty. His smile and spirit were his best qualities. He made everyone feel supported and special. Some of his most popular catch phrases were “wonderful”, “I love it”, and “I’m so proud of you”. This is what Dan would always want you to remember him for.
A proud firefighter for over 30 years, Dan was a Captain for the Flushing Fire Department and a Lieutenant for Bishop International Airport Fire Department in Flint, MI. Dan was more than just a first responder; he was a true hero demonstrating his courage, strength, and compassion in every aspect of his life. His legacy as a leader, persistently positive and deeply caring, will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
An avid hockey player, Dan discovered his love for the sport at the age of 5. He went on to play in many advanced leagues in Canada and Lake Placid, New York. Dan was a passionate fan of the game; a true glue guy. He was the kind of person every man wanted in his locker room, and everyone else would call a pain in their side to play against. His love for the game and his teammates was just another testament to his grit and character. Dan was a lifelong fly fisherman and loved the outdoors. Like his father and grandfather before him, he would often find himself in the river for hours and lose track of time. Dan’s true love was spending time with family at his happy place, Canada Creek Ranch.
Dan coached his kids’ swim teams at Flint Powers Catholic High School for four years and made a lasting impact with his positive attitude. He stayed on as a coach even after all of his own kids had graduated because he loved giving back. There are many young men and women in the community who tell stories of how Dan was a mentor to them during their youth.
They say it’s never too late. One of the brightest lights in Dan’s life was Lynn. They enjoyed
going to Red Wings games, Kentucky Derby parties, and traveling. Lynn even taught Dan to like football! They were perfect for one another, truly in love, and lived life to the fullest for the time they had together (he even got caught calling her just that, “perfect”).
Dan’s greatest love (besides his family and fiancé of course) were his beloved grandchildren,
Norah and Henry. They brought so much joy to his life as he helped chaperone field trips, encouraged “confidence walks”, attended Norah’s gymnastics, and all of Henry’s sports practices; breakfast dates were the best and babysitting along with Lynn (Nana) was always a treat.
Dan is survived by his loving fiancé, Lynn Markowski, who has been faithfully by his side; his wonderful children, Ally (Rocky) Stout, Brock (Courtney) Owen, Megan Owen, Jessica (Sunny) Dhaliwal, Ryan and Jordan Markowski; his beloved grandchildren, Norah, Henry, Ahna, Avani, and Leena; his cherished siblings Kathy, LeAnne, and Nick (Mary Jo) Owen. He was preceded in death by his parents Niles II and Lee Owen.
