Elizabeth M. “Bette” Barbour, passed away of natural causes on Tuesday, January 5, 2021, at McLaren Hospital in Flint, Michigan.
Bette was born nearly 94 years ago in Sale, Cheshire, England on February 16, 1927. She and her husband, the late Dr. David A. Barbour, emigrated from Southport, England to Pontiac, Michigan, in 1954.
Flint became their home in 1960 where they raised their family. Bette spent her last few years living at Woodhaven Senior Community.
Our amazing mother was a lifelong athlete and sports fan. Bette was known as a terrific golfer at Flint Golf Club, a strong tennis player at Genesee Valley Tennis Club, and an avid skier at resorts Up North. When she wasn’t playing sports herself, she was on the sidelines rooting for her kids and grandkids — attending every sports event imaginable. Family aside, there was nothing that gave Bette more joy than sports!
Our beloved Mum was the ‘quarterback’ of the family team, calling most of the shots. While Dad served as a Radiologist in Flint and Owosso, she took care of the family in every other way. She arranged trips to England to visit our extended family in the UK. We had wonderful family times at our ski cottage Up North, and at their retirement home in Florida — a place chosen for its golf courses, tennis courts and fly fishing for Dad.
Mum will be dearly missed by her three grown children and their spouses: Julianne Staton (and Craig) of High Point, N.C., Dr. Joanne Walker (and Brian) of Ann Arbor, and David M. Barbour (and Shelly) of Flushing. Her adoring grandchildren include Andrew Walker (and Julia) of Royal Oak, Dr. Jaclyn Walker (and Tony) of Denver, Colo., Christopher Staton (and Madison) of Chicago, and teenage brothers Ian and Kyle Barbour of Flushing. In August, Mum became a Great Grandmother to baby Charlotte Walker, whose arrival was the highlight of her year.
