Larry Lynn Judson, age 76, of Gaines, passed away peacefully at his home on June 11, 2026, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born on November 17, 1949, in Durand, Michigan, to the late Lawrence David and Eileen Joyce (Harrington) Judson. Larry’s life was marked by faith, devotion, service, and a steadfast love for his family and community, and he will be remembered with deep affection by all who knew him.
Larry was a man whose life reflected the values he held dear. He was loving, kind, and intelligent, and he carried himself with a warmth that made others feel welcome in his presence. He always had a smile on his face, and he was known for being very generous, fiercely devoted to his family, and beloved by all. He never knew a stranger, and his gentle spirit and friendly nature made it easy for people to trust him, laugh with him, and count on him. His life was a blessing to those around him, and his memory will remain a source of comfort and gratitude.
He is survived by his wife, Mary; his children, Christopher Judson, Lisa and Jeff Harkness, Elizabeth Holloway, and Susan and Ryan Pender; and his grandchildren, Michael, Alana, Kenny, Adrian, Jace, Myles, and Reed. He is also survived by his brother, Carl “Jim” and Linda Judson, and his sister, Loreen Judson. He was preceded in death by his parents and by his first wife, Gaynell Judson. Larry cherished his family deeply, and nothing brought him greater joy than being surrounded by those he loved. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, and his family was the center of his heart.
Larry earned his master’s degree in education and dedicated his career to shaping young lives through teaching and coaching. He taught at Oakley Schools for a short time before retiring from Byron Area Schools as a teacher and coach. He was especially known for his work as a Track and Golf coach for Byron Schools, where he encouraged students not only to improve in their sports, but also to grow in character, discipline, and confidence. His influence reached far beyond the classroom and playing field, and many who were blessed to learn from him or work alongside him will carry his lessons for the rest of their lives.
His service and leadership within the Masonic fraternity were extraordinary. Larry was raised into the Byron Masonic Lodge No. 80 on June 17, 2000, and he remained an active and faithful member of the Owosso Masonic Lodge No. 81 and the Perry Masonic Lodge No. 350. He served five terms as Worshipful Master of Byron No. 80, was named District Mason of the Year in 2011, and held 25 honorary Masonic lodge memberships around the state. He was honored to serve as the Most Worshipful Grand Master of the State of Michigan for 2023 and 2024, and he received the 33rd degree on August 26, 2025. Larry was also very active with Elf Khurafeh Shrine, where his commitment to service and brotherhood was evident in all he did. His Masonic life was a reflection of his integrity, leadership, and devotion to helping others.
Larry’s heart for service extended well beyond his professional and fraternal commitments. He was deeply involved in charity work and was especially known for driving children to appointments at the Shriners Hospital. He volunteered with the Red Cross for local and national disaster relief, always ready to help wherever there was need. He was extremely community minded and loved bringing people together. He had a gift for finding a way to make things work, and he was a natural problem solver who approached challenges with calm determination and practical wisdom. He also loved to travel and especially enjoyed getting in the car and driving just to see where he would end up. He was a lifelong golfer, and the game remained one of his enduring interests throughout his life.
Those who knew Larry will remember a man who was as sweet as sugar, a man whose kindness was genuine and whose presence was comforting. He lived with purpose, humility, and a servant’s heart. His life was a testimony to the power of faith, family, and service, and he leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him. As the Bible reminds us in 2 Timothy 4:7, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” Larry’s life reflected that spirit of perseverance and faithfulness, and his earthly journey now rests in the hands of his Savior.
Though his passing leaves a deep void, take comfort in the promise of eternal life and in the many memories he created through a life well lived. Larry will be remembered for his smile, his generosity, his intelligence, his devotion to family, and his unwavering commitment to serving others. His legacy of love, leadership, and Christian faith will endure in the hearts of his family, friends, students, fellow Masons, and all whose lives he touched
A memorial service to honor and celebrate Larry will be held on Saturday, July 11, 2026 at the Owosso Masonic Lodge No. 81, 301 N. Washington St. Owosso, MI at 12:00pm. The Judson family will receive friends at the Lodge beginning at 10:00am. Larry will be laid to rest in a private graveside service at Oakwood Cemetery in Gaines.
