Jeanese Lee (Daly) Shonts - Obituary
Jeanese Lee (Daly) Shonts, born June 3, 1937, died at home peacefully with family by her side on January 14, 2024. She was born in Flint, MI to Cecil and Viola (Tift) Daly of Clio, MI. After being raised in Clio, she married her high school sweetheart Tom Shonts in 1956. They raised their 4 children in Clio. After moving to Columbus, OH and Granville, OH, they retired in Howard City, MI.
Jeanese was an active, faithful, and vibrant Christian woman who was involved in several church, school and community activities over the years, while always putting family first. Her love for life and Christ was a beacon to all those who crossed her path, and her warm smile was a comfort to all those around her. She deeply loved her husband and family, but everyone in her life felt her kindness and positivity. Growing up in Clio, she played clarinet, twirled baton in band and participated in theater. While raising her family, she opened her own beauty shop and had many years of wonderful conversations to go with her wonderful hair styling. Active in Clio’s Community Church of God, she rejoiced in using her social and musical talents to engage the community in worship and in praising the Lord. She memorized many songs on the harmonica and enjoyed the piano. She also spent many evenings square dancing, enjoyed making ceramics, writing poetry, shopping and decorating. Moving to Grandville, OH, Jeanese continued her work in the community, catalyzing the creation of a 50+ community group at her church alongside a job at a local gift shop to spark up welcoming conversation that she- and others- enjoyed so much. She loved meeting with a small group of college girls from Denison University in Granville and continued those special relationships for many years. In Granville, she was a longtime nanny to Katie and Sara Thornbourough and loved them like her own. Moving to Howard City, MI to be closer to her grandchildren, Jeanese never missed a play, recital or ballgame. Finding her community in a place of the Lord yet again, she was a beloved member of Grace Community Church. She joined the Stephen’s Ministry Group which gave support to those in difficult circumstances and also helped in the Helping Hands ministry for those in need. Jeanese enjoyed peace in her later years with the company of her family, especially her loving husband Tom and sweet dog Tootsie, who will miss her very much. Tom’s unwavering devotion always ensured that Jeanese was loved and tenderly taken care of through the last days of her life.
Preceding her in death were her parents, her sisters Kay Dobbs, Donna Reed, Joyce Reed and brother Robert Daly. She is survived by her husband Tom Shonts, and children Lisa (Steve) Henderson, Tim (Deb) Shonts, Todd (Julie) Shonts, and Melissa (Tony) Petriella; four grandchildren Allison Petriella, David Shonts, Dominic Petriella and Christiana Shonts; brother Cecil Adrian (Sandra) Daly; sister Carol Malloy; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation is Friday, January 19th from 4-8 pm in Clio at O’Guinn Funeral Home. The funeral will take place Saturday, January 20th at West Vienna United Methodist Church in Clio, MI with visitation at 10:00 am and the funeral service at 11:00 am. Burial at the West Vienna Cemetery will immediately follow the funeral service. Luncheon will be provided afterward in the West Vienna United Methodist Church.
Please join us to mourn Jeanese’s passing but celebrate her incredible life in Christ. Memorial contributions can be sent to Newaygo Compassion Home at 20 S Stewart Ave, Fremont, MI 49412.
