Dennis was born in South Bend, Indiana on October 19, 1940, to Daniel Frederick and Virginia (Krause) Ellis. He spent his childhood in Saginaw, MI., where he graduated from Arthur Hill High School in 1958. He married Joan (Flynn) McKnight on June 12, 1965. He married Kathleen (Ruddy) Ellis in 1992. His love of education continued throughout his entire life. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from Alma College, his Bachelor of Science and Arts degree from the University of Detroit, his Master’s and Doctorate degrees from Wayne State University. He enlightened the minds of many students through his time spent teaching at Detroit Catholic Central High School, Southern Illinois University, and Shippensburg University. While at Shippensburg University he took a sabbatical year to work as an economist on a top secret project within the walls of our nation’s Pentagon in Washington D. C. He then became a Professor of Economics and Business Statistics at the University of Michigan-Flint, where he proudly spent the majority of his career. During his tenure as a teacher, he published multiple articles and two books, A Managerial Guide to Business Forecasting and Business Cycles and Forecasting.

Dennis was an avid fan of Michigan Wolverines football and would often be heard yelling “GO BLUE”! Dennis also enjoyed aviation, earning him the title “Grandpa Airplane”, which filled him with great pride. He took an intense interest in spending quality time with his grandchildren each week, taking them on special outings and tutoring anyone who asked for help in math. He was an extremely social person. He loved to be around family, friends, and any new friend who happened to cross his path. His gentleness, kindness, and constant supply of jokes will be profoundly missed.

Dennis is survived by his children, Rose (John) McMunigal, Daniel Ellis, and Maureen (Robert) Kelsey; his grandchildren: Heather McMunigal, Samuel Huffman, Emily Huffman, Nicole (Ellis) Snow, Jamie Ellis, Noah Ellis, Sydney Ellis, Jonah Ellis, Treva Kelsey and Grace Kelsey, his great-grandchildren Lincoln Snow and Baby Snow, and his sister, Kris Flora. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sons, Fredrick Ellis and William Ellis.

The family would like to express their deep appreciation for all of the doctors and nurses, and other healthcare workers fighting to save lives on the frontlines of this disease and reminds everyone to wear a mask to stop the spread of Covid-19.
