BYRNE, Shirley Joyce (Shipley) – of Burton, MI, age 79, passed away Saturday, May 20, 2023. A Funeral Service will be held 12:30 PM Friday, May 26, 2023 at St. Mark Lutheran Church, 5073 Daly Boulevard, Flint, MI 48506; Pastor Gary L. Beck officiating. Interment will take place 3 PM Friday, May 26, 2023 at Flint Memorial Park Cemetery following a post-service luncheon. The family will receive visitors 11:30 AM-12:30 PM Friday, May 26, 2023 at St. Mark Lutheran Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Mark Lutheran Church, in Shirley’s memory.
Shirley was born in Flint on November 14, 1943, the daughter of the late Kenneth and Neva Shipley. She was a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church. Shirley enjoyed working outside, all sorts of arts and crafts and spending time with her family, who were her whole world.
Shirley was a Kearsley Alumni who retired from Genesee County after more than 25 years before moving to Florida for 15 years. While in Florida, Shirley helped open and run a Child Care Center for the Lutheran church for 10 years. Shirley was the adored Nanny and Mommy to her grandchildren and daughter who she loved to spend time with. In 2007, she returned to Michigan with them to spend more time with her family here. For her, nothing was more important than family. For the past few years, she lived with her daughter, Shawn and her grandchildren, Stephanie and Brandon. She enjoyed doing diamond dot paintings, or dot dots as she called them, for her friends and family. Shirley was loving and generous and made the world a brighter place.
Shirley is survived by her only child, Shawn Johnson Richard; nephew, Jeffrey Johnson; two grandchildren, Stephanie Richard and Brandon Richard; one bonus grandchild, Mikel Polley; two siblings, Irene Shipley (Ron) Brasseur and Larry (Margaret) Shipley; many other loving family members and dear friends. She was preceded in death by the love of her life, Joseph Johnson; parents, Kenneth Shipley I and Neva Shipley; her favorite aunt, Frances Kallander and her brother, Kenneth Shipley II.
