John "Jack" Weisenberger went walking in God's fields on January 8, 2019. A lifelong farmer, Jack joined generations of his family in farming acreage along Ferden Road in Chesaning. After a long and stubborn struggle with Parkinson's and other health issues, God called Jack to steward the land in Heaven.
Born on July 27, 1939, Jack grew up on the family farm, son of the late Herman and Adeline (Deitering) Weisenberger. He was proud to be a member of the St. Michael's High School Class of 1957. After a stint in the Army from April 1963 to 1965, he returned home to work 24 years at Midland Ross in Owosso before turning to farming full-time.
Jack loved turning the soil for the first time in the spring. Like farmers everywhere, he hated picking rocks that grew constantly in the field. Watching the green shoots of corn, soybeans, and wheat spring from the ground made him smile - and then made him worry as he worked to keep the crops healthy to harvest.
Most would never guess that Jack was an exceptional dancer, and he was especially fond of polka. He met the love of his life, Judi Wachowicz of Saginaw, at a dance in Pennsylvania. A bus trip to Seven Springs for a 3-day polka fest sealed their fate. They were married on January 26, 1985. The dancing continued, as did the casino trips where Jack excelled at blackjack. Jack enjoyed traveling and had explored much of the western parts of the country - he and Judi continued to explore the world with trips throughout the United States, the Caribbean, Ireland, and Germany. A highlight of the Germany trip was attending the Deitering 750th Global Family Reunion in Lohne with several hundred relatives from his mother's side of the family.
When he wasn't traveling or farming, Jack was active with family, church, and later volunteered delivering Meals on Wheels. He enjoyed watching his beloved Michigan sports teams and long walks with the dog. Jack was a lifetime member of St. Michael Catholic Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus #2943.
Jack is survived by his wife, Judi; his sisters, Jeanette (Bob) Butterfield of Albuquerque, NM and Helen (Ken) Wenzlick of New Lothrop; his brother, Bob (Becky) Weisenberger of Pinckney, MI; his sister-in-law, Patricia Wachowicz of Saginaw; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, Herman and Adeline; his parents-in-law, Don and Joanne Wachowicz; and his brothers-in-law, Donald and James.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, January 12, 2019 at St. Michael Catholic Church of Maple Grove. Burial will follow at St. Michael's Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Nelson-House Funeral Homes Martin Chapel in Chesaning on Friday, January 11 from 2:00 to 8:00pm with a Vigil service at 7:00pm and a Rosary at 8:00pm. Visitation will also take place on Saturday at the church from 10:00am until the service.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the family for charitable distribution. Special thanks to the staff and caregivers at Chesaning Comfort Care and Valley Hospice. |
