In Loving Memory of Our Beloved Charles A. "Charlie"
Carmody Charlie was born in Livonia, Michigan on September 20, 1962, the first son of Richard F. (“Rick”) and Judith A. (“Judy”) Carmody. Charlie first came to Grand Blanc in the fall of 1969 when Charlie’s father Rick was relocated to the area. Together with younger brothers Dan & Andy, the family grew-up in the Ottawa Hills neighborhood of Grand Blanc. Charlie played goalie on several GFHA youth ice hockey teams, snow skied at Mt. Holly, was famous for starting the roller-hockey tradition in the new Carmody family basement, and spent countless days playing with brothers and many, many friends throughout the neighborhood.

Charlie entered Grand Blanc High School as a freshman in 1976, and his commitment to the community started early. Charlie was a major contributor to setting two world records for non-stop tandem bicycle riding to raise money for muscular dystrophy and more importantly to rallying community support for a cause he believed in. His love for Grand Blanc grew from there as Charlie became the “super fan” of Grand Blanc sports teams – leading pep-rallies, painting murals, starting new cheers, supporting The Bobcats in any way he could.

Charlie studied computer science at the University of Michigan in Flint (actually using punch cards to learn and run early main frame computer programs), and stayed close to friends, family, and sports in Grand Blanc. After completing his computer science degree, Charlie added a degree in education and started substitute teaching at Grand Blanc and other schools in the area. Charlie first taught full-time for a few years in nearby Clarkston, simply awaiting his chance to return to Grand Blanc, which finally came in 1992. Over his 25 years at Grand Blanc, Charlie was a gifted math & computer teacher & regular tutor that the students loved, was one of the most successful class sponsors in school history, and famously announced thousands of football, basketball, track, and other events as the “Voice of the Bobcats”, with his booming voice echoing through town on Friday nights every fall. Charlie was the Founder & President of the Grand Blanc High School Alumni Association, founder of the annual Distinguished Alumni Awards, and an honorable inductee in the early 2000's.

Charlie proposed to Chris in spectacular fashion writing “Will You Marry Me?” in the snow across the Grand Blanc football field, then leading Chris up the bleachers to see. Fortunately, she said yes, and on June 29, 1996, he was lucky enough to marry the love of his life (and the ever patient) Chris Rodgers. Their son Jonathan (“Jon”) was born in July 2001 and daughter Olivia (“O”) in April 2003. Today Jon is a sophomore at Grand Blanc High School, Olivia is an 8th grader at West Middle School, and following their father, both are avid Grand Blanc sports fans. Last summer Charlie was thrilled to take Chris and the kids to Hawaii to celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary.

Beyond family and Grand Blanc, Charlie was a member of Berean Baptist Church, was an avid University of Michigan football & hockey fan, Red Wings fan, and loved family vacations to Disney World in Florida & California. More than anything, Charlie was a remarkable husband, father, son, brother, uncle, and friend of so many. His extraordinary smile, tremendous positive energy, booming voice, and never-ending drive to make both people and places better will never be replaced. He was a pillar of the community in Grand Blanc, and touched the lives of thousands of students, athletes, parents, family and friends.

We love you Charlie, and we can’t wait until the next time we all can be together again.
