Wegher, Reverend Father William Frank, formerly of Flushing, now serving the Flint area (also known as Fr. Billy), age 59, died Wednesday, November 2nd, 2022, at McLaren Flint, Michigan. The funeral service will be celebrated at 11 am on Monday, November 7th, 2022, at St. Robert Catholic Church in Flushing, MI. Bishop Earl Boyea and Fr Mark Przybysz will concelebrate the Mass. Visitation will occur at Rossell Funeral Home from 4-8 pm on Saturday, November 5th, and Sunday, November 6th, from 12-8 pm, and Monday at 10 am at St. Robert Catholic Church before the service at 11 am. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the family's wishes. Knights of Columbus Chapter 10170 service will occur at 7 pm with a Rosary following, on Saturday, November 5th at Rossell Funeral Home. Family and friends sharing memories begin at 6 pm on Sunday, November 6th, and Parastas service will start at 7 pm at Rossell Funeral Home. Burial pending to be announced.
William was born in Manhattan, New York on October 6th, 1963. He was baptized at St. Joseph Hungarian Catholic Church in Flint, MI, and attended St. Robert Catholic Church, where he received his sacraments of First Holy Communion and Holy Confirmation. His confirmation name was Giovanni, after his God-father Carlo Lubiato. At St. Robert, he began the seminary program in the eighth grade. Bill graduated from Flushing High School in 1981, with honors. He received his Bachelor's Degree from the University of Michigan-Flint in History and also earned a Pontifical Doctoral Degree. During his senior year of college, he was part of the honors program, where he studied abroad in Paris, France. After his return, he began his studies at St. John's Seminary in Plymouth, MI, and for five years at the American College of the Immaculate Conception in Leuvan, Belgium. Bill was a Second Lieutenant Chaplain in the U.S. Air Force Reserves, stationed in Germany and England during his stay in Europe in the late 80s and early 90s.
Fr. Bill was ordained a Roman Catholic Priest in the Diocese of Lansing, MI, on August 31st, 1991. He served at Holy Family in Grand Blanc, UofM St. Mary in Ann Arbor, St. Michael in Flint, Holy Redeemer in Burton, St. Mary in Pickney, Holy Rosary in Flint/St. Mary in Mt. Morris, and currently at St. Mary in Durand and St. Joseph in Gaines. Fr. Bill also attended St. Michael Byzantine Catholic Church all his childhood, where he was inspired by Msgr. Eugene Chromoga to become a Byzantine Catholic Priest as well as a Roman Catholic Priest. One of his greatest experiences was having the privilege to meet with Pope John Paul II as part of a private audience. He taught theology at St. John’s seminary, Michigan State University, and University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. Fr Bill was a columnist for Faith magazine with question-and-answer articles. He also served on the council of American Bishops.
Fr. Bill was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed small game and deer hunting with the Tieppo and Wegher Families at the Family cabin and property near Hubbard Lake. He enjoyed the Upper Peninsula and all areas in Northern Michigan. He also loved his cabin/home in Harrisville, MI, which was built with family, friends, and his father, Ray. In addition to Faith magazine, he wrote for Woods and Waters Magazine about his Michigan adventures. Bill was a devoted UofM fan (Go Blue), a craftsman who created furniture, and spoke seven languages. He spent time as a Docent for the UofM Ann Arbor Museum. He was a gourmet cook and a fan of Ernest Hemmingway. Bill loved to dance, laugh, and going to the casino with his mom. He enjoyed life to the fullest.
Fr. Bill will be greatly be missed and will be remembered by his mother Rose Marie (Rozsa) Wegher; sister Cheryl (Wegher) and husband Bill McFadden, Deborah (Wegher) and husband Brian Morehouse; brother Michael and wife Heather (Schlemmer) Wegher; nieces Shelby Taylor (Wegher) and husband Benjamin Parker, Emma Rose Wegher; great nephews and niece, Benjamin Parker, AnnMarie Parker, Maverick Parker; God-children, Shelby (Wegher) Parker, Michael Swearingen; God-mother, JoAnn (Havrilla) Lubiato; dear friends of over 41 years, Mark and wife Kathy Reene, John and wife Julie Nielsen, Kevin Heitke, Sue (Meissner) Martinis, Maureen "Moe" Carroll; special aunt and uncle, Julie (Rozsa) and husband Ray Rust; many aunts, uncles, cousins, dear friends, and parishioners. He was preceded in death by his father, Raymond Edward; grandparents Frank and Juliana (Obluk) Rozsa, Remo and Onalee (Hall) Wegher; God-father Carlo Lubiato; beloved aunt and uncle Bill and Rose (Rozsa) Ewald and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
