Robert L. Chase (Bob) died peacefully on February 28, 2024 in his home in Helena, MT. He was 89 years old.
Bob was born in Flint, MI to parents Margaret and Gerald Chase. He grew up in Flushing, MI and graduated from Flushing High School, where he played several sports. Following high school, he attended and graduated from what was then Michigan College of Mining and Technology (now Michigan Technological University) with a degree in Civil Engineering.
After marrying Athelda Hunter in July 1958, Bob and Thel lived in various places throughout the country where Bob’s career in the Air Force and Dupont moved them. They ultimately returned to Flushing where Bob spent most of his career as the County Engineer for Genesee County, Michigan.
Bob was very industrious and had many hobbies throughout his life - hunting, fishing, painting, camping, golf and chess to name a few. He excelled at wood working and built many stunning pieces of furniture; his tendency toward perfectionism lent itself well to this! He and Thel were longtime University of Michigan football season ticket holders and loved tailgating with friends and watching the game in Michigan Stadium.
In 1975 Bob built the house where he resided for almost 50 years. Always a builder and fixer and do-it-yourselfer, Bob had a knack for figuring out why something was not working correctly, whether it be mechanical, electrical, plumbing, etc., and fix it. He loved escaping to the basement where he would spend hours building or repairing a project.
He and Thel owned a condo in Oscoda, Michigan for many years and enjoyed spending time at the beach with family and friends or catching salmon and lake trout in Lake Huron on his boat.
Bob also loved travel and took many trips around the world to unusual and interesting destinations. He particularly enjoyed getting “off the beaten path” and really immersing himself in the local culture. He had a special love of Africa and visited three times.
Bob is survived by children Ted Chase (Kathy) of Helena, MT and Beth Campbell of Eden, NY, grandchildren Allison Ferro (Robi) and Valerie Chase, great grandchildren Chase and Lily Ferro; and his sister Sue Price.
Bob is preceded in death by his parents, wife Thel, son Michael and companion Beverly Gatenby.
A memorial service will be held at the Flushing Presbyterian Church in Flushing, MI on Sunday April 21, 2024 at 12:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Flushing Presbyterian Church if desired. |
