Jerry was born in Flint Michigan on December 1, 1937 the son of the late Floyd Avery and Birdie Beatrice (Vineyard) Cox. His parents were born in Missouri and relocated to Flint in 1927 and remained residents of Flint until their deaths. He and his brother Bobby Dale would continue to reside in the Flint area until their respective marriages. Jerry was joined in marriage to Evelyn B. McMaster on May 24, 1958 at Genesee Bible Protestant Church. Shortly thereafter they moved to Jackson Michigan because of Jerry’s work but would return to Flint. In July of 1962 Jerry and Evelyn moved to Davison and settled into what remains their current home. Jerry attended Flint Community Schools which included Cody and McKinley, and he graduated from Flint Central High School. Jerry was a hard worker from an early age. He began delivering the Detroit Times and News, had an ice cream cart during the summers, and also worked at the Fair Store. He later started working for Western Electric until he was laid off. He worked briefly at the General Motors Truck Plant until he was able to return to Western Electric in March of 1960. He remained there until 1974 when he was able to transfer to Michigan Bell where he would continue with thirty-two years of service until his retirement. Jerry was a true Christian man and had been a member of North Baptist Church, Genesee Bible Protestant Church (which later became Genesee Independent Baptist Church), and then in October of 1998 he and Evelyn joined Emmanuel Baptist Church and continued to be active members. Jerry loved gospel music and was an active choir member for over forty years. He enjoyed being the song-leader for church services, singing duets with Evelyn, and singing with the men’s quartet on occasion.
Jerry loved sports. He spent many years playing softball in the Flint men’s and church leagues. He served as basketball coach for Flint Christian School from 1965 until 1973. He spent over twenty-four years officiating basketball in Genesee, Shiawassee, and Lapeer Counties, as well as refereeing tournaments and district games throughout Michigan. He loved to deer hunt with family and spent over thirty-three years enjoying the sport. He was also an avid golfer, playing years in the church league and on special occasions with his son and other family members.
He is survived by his wife of over sixty-two years Evelyn, his son Timothy Paul and wife Becky Cox, and daughter Terri Coleen and husband Timothy Bondy. He also leaves his loving grandchildren: Mackenzi (King) Olajoku, Alexandra Cox, Whitney Bondy, Tyler (Natalie) Bondy, Shelby Bondy, Mallory Bondy, and his great grandchildren; Birdie Olajoku, and Cassius Olajoku. He also leaves many extended family and friends. He is preceded in death by sister Colleen Cox and brother Bobby Cox. Please share your condolences at www.hansenfuneralhome.net
