Rodger D. Rainey, age 72 of Lennon, passed away Saturday, August 14, 2021, at his home. In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place. The family will receive friends on Thursday, August 19, 2021, from 2:00 - 4:00 PM and 6:00 - 8:00 PM at Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, 501 N. Saginaw Street, Durand, MI 48429. It is the request of the family that social distancing and masking guidelines are observed during the visitation.
Rodger was born in Alma, Michigan on March 27, 1949. He grew up in Lennon and graduated from Durand High School in 1968. He entered the United States Airforce immediately following high school and was honorably discharged in 1972. Upon his return to civilian life, he worked for General Motors Truck and Bus Assembly and remained there until his retirement. Rodger was a lifetime member of the AMVETS Post 2273 in Durand and a member of the Local 598. Rodger married Brenda Lee Perkins at Faith United Baptist Church in Flint, Michigan on July 26, 2003. They spent 21 wonderful years together. Rodger enjoyed watching sports and participated in many sporting activities when he was younger. He loved the Detroit Tigers and planned many evenings around their baseball season. He met with his classmates the second Saturday of every month at the Lennon Cafe where he built so many strong friendships throughout the years. He was always the life of the party, he loved making everyone laugh and made new friends wherever he would go. His favorite moments were enjoying lots of laughs at home with his wife, out with friends, or any time with his grandchildren. He never missed an event or game for any of his grandchildren. He was and always will be their biggest fan. Rodger never met a stranger, was loved by all, and was referred to as a “Lennonite”.
Rodger is survived by his wife; Brenda, his children; Natalie Fournier and Neal (Leara) Garner, his grandchildren; Chandler (Nicole Hoover) Fournier, Carter Fournier, Logan Garner, Cody (Autumn) Garner, Angel Garner, Kelsey Garner, Kyle Garner, Ethan Garner and Liam Garner, his 2 great-granddaughters, his brothers; Clyde Rainey, Jr. and Paul (Tracy) Rainey, his sisters-in-law; Ethel (Ben) Burks and Geraldine Johns, his brothers-in-law; Earl Taylor and Larry Bensett , his many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Rodger is preceded in death by his parents Clyde E. (Oma) Rainey, Sr., and his beloved cat “Birdie”.
