Alan LaBerge

Born: 6/28/1941
Died: 5/5/2025
Age: 83
Community: Flushing, MI

Alan Edward LaBerge, 83, of Flushing, passed away peacefully on May 5, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.

A devoted husband, proud father of four, and adoring grandfather of eight, Alan’s life was defined by his kindness, humor, dedication, and unwavering optimism.

Born on June 28, 1941, in Hale, Michigan, to Enos and Olive LaBerge, Alan graduated from Hale High School in 1959, where he served as student council president and was a standout athlete in basketball and baseball. He often reflected fondly on his time in the “fabulous ’50s,” sharing stories of friendships that lasted a lifetime.

Alan met his love, his heart and his best friend, Carol, at Colonel’s Drive-In in Flint. They married on September 9, 1961, and spent 63 wonderful years together building a family and life grounded in love, faith, and service.

After completing an apprenticeship at Buick Motor Division, Alan earned an associate’s degree in applied science and management from Mott Community College and pursued further engineering studies at GMI. His 30+ year career at Buick spanned roles as Engineering Supervisor and Process Engineer, which took him across the country. After retiring, he found passion in selling insurance at the Hallmark Agency in Grand Blanc, where he thrived on meeting and helping people.

Alan gave generously of his time, serving as President of the Dye Elementary PTO, the Concordia ’76 Soccer Club, and Vice-Chairman of the Greater Genesee County Youth Soccer Association. He coached AYSO soccer, was an active Lions Club member and President, and a faithful parishioner of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church. Family was at the center of Alan’s life. He never missed a school event or sporting activity, cheering on his children and grandchildren with pride. He found great joy at Long Lake, spending summers waterskiing, enjoying campfires, and creating cherished memories with family. He was also an avid motorcyclist, traveling across the country and forming bonds with people wherever he went. A highlight was a motorcycle trip through the Smoky Mountains with his son, Greg. He also treasured annual snowmobiling trips with friends and national park adventures with his family.

A loyal fan of Big Ten sports, the Detroit Lions and Tigers, and his children’s and grandchildren’s teams, Alan was always ready to celebrate their successes and encourage their dreams. He took great pride in his Flint roots and often shared stories of the city’s unique spirit with others. Alan was known for his storytelling, generosity, and deep sense of gratitude. Despite facing physical challenges later in life, his positive attitude never faltered. He became a role model of optimism, strength and resilience, especially to his grandchildren, embodying the belief that “attitude is everything.” If the wealth of a man’s life is defined by how much he loved and was loved by others; by the manner in which he led his children faithfully in God’s image while teaching them the virtues of life; and by the everlasting love between Alan and our mother, then our Dad was rich beyond his means.

Alan is survived by his beloved wife, Carol;

Children, Sherrill (Michael Shumaker), Dr. Susan Deters (James†), Karen LaBerge, and Gregory (Meredith);

grandchildren Sara (Michael), Katie, Andrew, Elli (Austin), Emily, Trevor, Noah, and Alex;

siblings-in-law Richard Cherry, Ruth LaBerge, and Meceal LaBerge;

and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, in-laws Anthony and Angeline Cherry, brothers Gary and James, and sister-in-law Dianne Cherry.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 AM (viewing at 10 AM) on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, 2415 Bagley Street, Flint, with Father Matthew Bonk officiating.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, May 13, from 4–8 PM at Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Flint, with a vigil service at 7 PM.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Alan’s name to Leader Dogs for the Blind, the PM&R UMAISE Gift Fund (supporting adaptive sports), or the Paul Dresser Memorial Soccer Fund.

Alan’s legacy lives on in the hearts of those he loved and inspired. He showed us all what it means to live a life of purpose, love, and quiet strength.
