Flossie Emily (Brewer) Weaver was called home to Heaven on the evening of Tuesday, April 12, in Walled Lake, Michigan at 90 years old. A visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and celebration of life service immediately follows from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Friday, April 29, at North Baptist Church, 4004 Lennon Road, Flint, Michigan. Dr. Dallas Gatlin will be officiating. A graveside service at Crestwood Memorial Cemetery, 2020 East Hill Road, in Grand Blanc on Saturday, April 30, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. is for immediate family only. Pastor Hal Burkholder will be officiating.
Flossie was born in Greene County (Paragould), Arkansas, on Sunday, June 28, 1931. She spent her childhood on a farm, excelling in academics and sports. Her high energy and positive spirit as a cheerleader suited her perfectly. She met her sweetheart, Clyde, at New Friendship Church. They graduated from Oak Grove High School together in 1949, and were married on Tuesday, July 4, 1950, in their hometown. As newlyweds, they lived in Flint, where Clyde worked for General Motors, and Augusta, Georgia while Clyde was stationed there. In Flint, they created a wonderful life upon welcoming daughters Susan and Jacqueline. Flossie volunteered for her children’s schools and extracurricular activities. She worked as an Avon representative for 60 years and was in the President’s Club. She was also a member of the American Business Women’s Association and Red Hat Society. She was an avid bowler, golfer, and softball player. Shopping was a favorite pastime, as she was a fashionista. She enjoyed Christian/country music, knitting, painting ceramics, playing cards, reading, television game shows, traveling, watching the Detroit Tigers, and weekly beauty shop visits. Famous for her brownies and cheeseball recipes, she was an outstanding cook. A host with the most, her house was always open to family and friends. Summertime was treasured in her backyard at pool parties. Christmas was her favorite holiday, and she always made anniversaries and birthdays special. She enjoyed lunches and walks with her girlfriends. Characteristics to best describe her include competitive, fun, and witty. Her “chuckle” was contagious. As a southern belle, she often pronounced words with an accent, both cute and funny, which added to her charm. She was the optimal conversationalist, referring to everyone as “hon.” Her nature was warm and welcoming, even to strangers. The greatest role she owned, however, was serving the Lord through Fenton Road Baptist Church. She was involved in almost every aspect, predominately organizing meals and social events. She had a gifted voice in the choir and was a leader in the youth programs. Being a mother and grandmother were her proudest accomplishments. She was deeply involved in her family members’ lives. She was an admirable daughter, sister, wife, mother, cousin, aunt, grandmother, great-grandmother, friend, and neighbor.
Flossie is survived by her daughters, Susan (Gregory) Cocke and Jacqueline (Thomas) von Sydow; grandchildren, Brandon Cocke, Bret (Kelly) Cocke, Kelsey (Wesley) Cocke-Weir, Sarah (Scott) Williams, Amanda (Steven) Olsen, and Travis von Sydow; great-grandchildren Parker, Mackenzie, and Lukas Cocke, Seth Williams, and Myrah Olsen; sister Charlene Parker; brother-in-law Bud Weaver; and sister-in-law Katherine Weaver. Flossie is also survived by many dear nephews, nieces, and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Clyde Weaver, Jr.; parents Van and Gladys Brewer; siblings Jeaneice Brewer, Thomas (Dorothy) Brewer, Chester (Helen) Brewer, and Shay (Dorothy) Brewer; in-laws Clyde Sr. and Ella Weaver; brothers-in-law Avron Parker and Bruce Weaver; and sister-in-law Rosemary Weaver.
Flossie, whose first name alone gave her remarkable charisma, had a heart of gold. She was beautiful, both externally and internally. She was a lovely lady with class, and tremendously influential on all who had the privilege of sharing this extraordinary journey with her. Although she will be genuinely missed, her soul shall live on in all of us forever.
Flossie was generous beyond measure, consistently helping the less fortunate. Donations can be made to honor her favorite organizations, Carriage Town Ministries, carriagetown.org/donate, and Old Newsboys of Flint, onbflint.org/general-donations.php.
