Gordon Mark Gallagher, 64 years old, passed from this world to the next on Wednesday, June 16, 2021 surrounded by his three children and wrapped in the loving arms of his soulmate and wife of 44 years.
Mark, as his friends and family knew him, was born on June 3, 1957 to Hughie and Maxine (Kitch) Gallagher. He was raised in Flint and attended Westwood Heights Schools where he was known to charm his female classmates into doing his typing homework and spend his mornings helping his mom and the other lunch ladies in the school cafeteria.
Mark got his first experience as a working man at 14 years old at the local A&W, washing mugs and grumbling about the lack of free hotdogs. By 19, he had joined the assembly line at General Motors where he would retire after 32 years of dutiful employment. While his work was in the shop, his true passion was on the ball field. Mark enjoyed a 35+ year career as a MSHAA official and umpire, calling games all over the state of Michigan, Florida and Cooperstown, NY. Mark devoted countless hours to youth ball programs through Carman-Ainsworth Community Education serving as a coach, an official, an organizer and even running the concession stand. No job was beneath him. He believed in teaching the fundamentals of the game and that every child who wanted to play should have the opportunity. His proud attention to detail and commitment to professionalism was steadfast and he will live on in the memories of hundreds of T-ball, baseball, softball, basketball, and volleyball players whose games he called and teams he coached.
Mark married his best friend, the love of his life Kathleen (Kalakay) on June 11, 1977.
Together they raised three children and greeted 12 grandchildren. They built a beautiful life together travelling in their RV, cruising to tropical islands, playing with their grandchildren, enjoying long walks and pickleball games.
Mark is preceded in death by his parents, siblings Carol (John) Brooks, Brenda Bouche, Bill Gallagher and Mary (John) Haacker and parents-in-law, Robert and Wilma (Bruckner) Kalakay.
He is survived by his wife Kathy, son Kurt (Jackie) Gallagher, daughters Kelly (Daniel) Sowa, Mary (Adam) Bogdanowicz, his sister Marilyn Kay (Harold) Chick and several siblings-in-law, nieces and nephews and 12 beloved grandchildren.
A celebration of life is planned for July 2, 2021 at Creasy Bicentennial Park, 1505 East Grand Blanc Road, in Grand Blanc at 4 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Kathleen Gallagher for the Mark Gallagher Memorial Tournament Fund to be created in his honor.
