EWLES, Donald "Donnie" Edward, age 66, died Tuesday July 31, 2012 at home surrounded by his loving family after a year and a half courageous battle with Cancer of Unknown Primary (CUP). Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Friday August 3, 2012 at Sharp Funeral Homes, Fenton Chapel, 1000 Silver Lake Road, Fenton. Chaplain Dennis J. Saulino, officiating. Memorial contributions may be to the Donald E. Ewles Criminal Justice Scholarship Endowment at Mott Community College or to the Elf Khurafeh Shrine Temple Transportation Fund. Don was born in Flint, Michigan on May 8, 1946, the son of Dolly and Ralph Alexander. He graduated from Southwestern High School in 1964 and later attended Mott Community College. Don served his country in the U.S. Marines. In 1983, Don met his best friend and love of his life, Sharon Ward of Lake Orion, at a top-fuel dragster boat race in Knoxville, Tennessee. They married in 1986 and built a beautiful life together in Grand Blanc and later in Linden, Michigan. Don was proudly employed as a Deputy for Genesee County Sheriff Department for over 23 years, retiring in 2002. During his successful career, he was selected and honored as "Officer of the Year" by the Hundred Club, the Forty & Eight Organization, the Optimist Club. He served as Chief Advisor to the Genesee County Sheriff Explorer's Post 125 for 10 years, during which time he led and trained over 400 students, many of whom went on to achieve very successful law enforcement careers. He was a lifetime member of the Linden Masonic Lodge #132 and the Elf Khurafeh Shrine Temple. He was Past President of the Fenton Shrine Club, former Director of the Shrine Security Unit, and served with joy as an honorary Shrine clown, known as "Bongo" to children throughout Genesee County. For the past four years, Don was an executive office for Elf Khurafeh Shrine Temple, currently serving as Chief Rabban (Vice President). Don loved life and lived it to the fullest. He never met a stranger; his charismatic and loyal personality drew people to him instantly and caused most to become lifelong friends. He was happiest when hanging out with family and friends, spending time on a tropical beach, helping children, golfing, shopping at Home Depot with buddies Greg Serges and Duane Titmus, and constructing things. Don is survived by his loving wife Sharon; son, Gregory of Florida; very special niece, Berteen Ewles; father and mother-in-law, Jack and Rosalie Ward; sister-in-law, Sheila Ward; nieces, Debbie Tobias and Beverly McManus; nephew, Ernie Ewles; several great and great-great nieces and nephews; and a host of very close friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dolly and Ralph Alexander; brother, Ernest Ewles; and son, Edy Ewles. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Christopher Iacobelli of Fenton; Dr. Grace Chen and her team at the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center and to the caregivers at Seasons Hospice.
