Age: 82
Community: Flint, MI

Richard Keith Shoup of Flint, age 82, died Saturday, Nov. 6, 2021.

Richard was born on Aug. 30, 1939, the son of the late Clay and Alice Shoup. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Alan Shoup.

He lived in Flint most of his life. As a hard worker he loved providing for his family. His work philosophy was that your job is your number one priority to support your family. His strong work ethic began early as a paperboy delivering the news over several blocks for the Flint Journal. As an adult, he became a journeyman carpenter working for many years with Hall’s Roofing and Siding. Later, he took employment with Ford Mazda driving over 100 miles from his home saying that he would drive any distance that was necessary to provide well for his family.

He loved his home with his beloved wife, Lucy, and called it his “castle”. His creative handiwork and carpentry skills were evident everywhere throughout their home as he could build anything. His backyard was turned into a garden oasis where he and Lucy would enjoy the birds coming to his many feeders, the goldfish in his pond, and many colorful plantings.

Richard was a lifelong student, always eager to learn new things. He enjoyed reading about the Civil War, WW2, and native American history. He gained a wealth of knowledge about sports and especially his beloved Detroit Tigers.

Neighbors, friends, and family knew him as a generous, giving person, always there to help anyone in need. If someone needed a tool and he had one, he was quick to loan it. He enjoyed fixing old broken fans or vacuum cleaners. For anyone that needed one of these, he would give it away. His always inquisitive mind would cause him to study how things work by quiet, persistent observation until he figured it out.

Together, Richard and Lucy always had an open door for any family member who needed shelter. They would never turn anyone away so they seldom experienced an empty nest. Richard was a gentle, tender hearted man who lived out his Christian faith in the kindnesses he showed to those around him.

Richard would say his greatest accomplishment was his very large family of 5 children, 11 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild!

Richard is survived by his wife of 62 years, Lucy (Lara) Shoup, along with brothers, Kenneth Shoup (Judy), Max Shoup, and a sister, Carolyn Peterson (David).
His children include daughters, Sherri Steele (Curtis) and Sarah Shoup; sons, Steve Shoup, Sidney Shoup (Rosaura), and Stuart Shoup (Sandy Goyette).
Grandchildren are Ericka Duncan (Ron), Jamie Herfurth (Mark), Corey Holcomb (Julie), Mariam Shoup, Wendy Shoup, Vincent Shoup, Christopher Shoup (Dacia Genow), Michelle Shoup, Abbygail Shoup, Noah Ross, and Sullivan Todd.

In addition to his 14 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild, he leaves numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many dear friends.
