May (Rider), Mary A.- of Montrose, age 91, went to be with her Lord and Savior on March 15, 2022, at home surrounded by loving family. Honoring her wishes, cremation will take place. No services will be held at this time.
Mary was born October 18, 1930, in Gowanda, New York, to the late Robert and Daphne (Dye) Rider. MaryAnn had 4 children, Kirk May of California, Kim (Ron) Kanatzar Blue Springs, MO, Robert (Amber) May of Montrose, MI, and infant son Ryan May, deceased. MaryAnn was blessed with 4 grandchildren: Jennifer (Chris) Toland, Ryan (Erin) Kanatzar, Jamie (Tony) Thompson, and Maggie (Mike) Persall, 7 Great grandchildren. Raised in Cherry Creek, New York, with her two brothers, James (Annette) Rider and David (Sally) Rider.
MaryAnn attended Fredonia College and Bryant and Stratton Business College in Buffalo, New York before working as a secretary for a high-ranking noncommissioned officer in Washington DC. While there she attended with friends a USO dance and met her lifelong love Marine CPL Albert May. They were married in Quantico, VA and were married 63 years before he passed. They raised their family in Flint, MI, where MaryAnn retired from Carmen Ainsworth schools after 25 years. After retirement MaryAnn and her husband moved to Linville, NC where they enjoyed hiking, square dancing, enjoying mountain music and musicals. She was very humble about her love of volunteering. Winning the 2008 North Carolina Award for Volunteer Service. MaryAnn was a talented musician, playing trumpet in school and piano, and keyboard in church and at home. She loved to knit and sew; her baking was more than delicious.
In 2010 she moved to Montrose, MI where she enjoyed going to Montrose Methodist Church where she met many friends and was a member of the crazy quilters. She was often seen at many sporting events of her great grandsons Conner and Mason. Lovingly referred to as Rams sports Granny. She also looked forward to and enjoyed the many calls and facetimes with her out of state great grands, Parker, Brittany, Alaina, Brayden, and Leni. She loved them all dearly.
