Bernadine Galla
Died Nov. 2, 2010

CEDAR – Bernadine Galla from Cedar passed away at Tendercare of Leelanau on Nov. 2, 2010 at the age of 96.
She was known as “Ma”, “Grandma” or “Bergy” by family who loved her dearly. She will be sorely missed and always remembered. Her family always looked forward to her homemade bread, paczki and meatballs at family gatherings.
She was born on a farm in Centerville Township on Feb. 5, 1914, the oldest of 10 children to Joseph and Selma (Schopieray) Kabat. Bernadine walked 3 miles to Holy Rosary School and boarded there in the winter months.
Later she attended Hill Top School until her 8th Grade. She married her neighbor the late Peter Galla of Centerville Township on Nov. 9, 1931 and moved to his farm and together they raised four children.
She fully participated in planting and harvesting crops and raising animals. She handpicked seasonal fruit crops, taking her young children along to help support the family. Peter and Bernadine retired from farming in 1978 and moved to Cedar.
Bernadine enjoyed listening to polka music, polka dancing, playing cards and going to the casino.
Bernadine was a lifetime member of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Isadore and a member of The Rosary Society. She was a woman of strong Catholic faith and prayed the Rosary daily.
Surviving are her children, Edward (Pauline) of Cedar, Raymond (Helen) of Lake Leelanau, Leonard (Charlene) Galla and Theresa (Fred) Kulanda of Traverse City; two sisters, Rosemary (Mel) Varney and Germaine Garvin; five sister-in-laws, Susanna, Peggy, Germaine, Mary, and Rebecca Kabat; 14 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren;
She was predeceased by her parents, husband Peter in 1990, a grandson, Robert Kulanda in 1967; seven brothers, Theodore, Edmund, Leo, Frank, Harry, Anthony and Bernard Kabat; a brother in law, Edward Garvin; and a sister in law, Clara Kabot.
Visitation will be held Thursday, Nov. 4 from 5 to 8 p.m. with the Rosary to be prayed at 7 p.m. at the Holy Rosary Church of Isadore. The mass will be celebrated Friday, Nov. 5 at 11 a.m. with visitation one hour prior to the mass. Burial will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Isadore. Father Donald Libby will serve as celebrant.
