Phillips, William Jewett “Bill”, Jr. of Flushing age 99 years, drifted into Jesus' arms on Sunday, March 5, 2017, at Hyde Park Assisted Living. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday, March 20, 2017, at Rossell Funeral Home. Pastor Jim Combs will officate. Burial will be at Chippewa Township Cemetery at a later date. Visitation will be 2-7 p.m. Sunday, March 19, 2017, at Rossell Funeral Home, in Flushing. Memorial contributions may be made to the Chippewa Lake Fireworks Fund or Hillsdale College.

William was born in Flint, Michigan, on February 21, 1918, the son of William and Ruth (Schram) Phillips. He married Evah Lucille Wolfe at her parents farm in Dugger, Indiana on September 4, 1949. She preceded him in death on March 27, 2003. Mr. Phillips attended Zimmerman Elementary School and graduated from Flint Central High School. He attended the trade school at Detroit Diesel. After graduation, he worked at A.C. Spark Plug in Flint. In 1941, Bill enlisted in the Army Air Coprs. He trained as a Airplane Mechanic and then went on to Air Force flight training and became an Aerial Gunnery Instructor, stateside. He later served on B-17s in the Pacific Theatre, in the 2nd Emergency Rescue Squadron stationed in the Philippines during WWII. After military service, he joined his father in the insurance business (licensed agent from 1938-2001) and later became President of W.J. Phillips, Inc. Bill participated in numerous community activities. He was one of the founders of Genesee County Traffic Safety Commission, Past President (1956-57) of the Independent Insurance Agents of Genesee County and a longtime member (57 years) of the Downtown Flint Lions Club. He and Evah were active in the Flushing Community where Bill worked on the Planning Commission, was Past President of Central Elementary P.T.A. and chairman of the Building Committee of Flushing United Methodist Church from 1973-1978, when the new sanctuary was built. He and his wife enjoyed gardening, canning and freezing their produce. For several years, they made their own maple syrup. Much of Bill's summers and falls were spent at a Chippewa Lake cottage, where all of their family enjoys fishing, sailing and relaxing together at the lake. Bill and Evah loved to travel, especially to visit both of their extended families and attended the Wolfe Family Reunion every year.

Bill is survived by his sons, Gregory and wife Mary Jane Phillips of Flushing, Wm. Brian and wife Susan Phillips of Kalamazoo, Stephen and wife Marlene Phillips of Lapeer; grandchildren, Tyler, Joseph, Jeffrey, Megan Salazar, Zachery, Joshua, Aaron, Hannah Wiles; great-grandchildren, Ryan, Max, Lilly, Violet, Hazel, Otto, Lucy and Liam Salazar; sister, Elizabeth Stewart. He was preceded in death by his brother, James E. Phillips.
