BROPHY, Barbara "Barb" - Of Flint, age 85, died Friday, February 26, 2021.
Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated 12 noon Saturday, March 20, 2021 at St. Pius X Catholic Church, G3139 Hogarth Avenue, Flint, with burial of her ashes at New Calvary Cemetery immediately following. Visitation 11am Saturday at church until the time of the Mass. The Mass will be live streamed with details to follow.
The family will gather at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Flint at 6pm Friday, March 19th.
A memorial prayer service will be held at 7pm.
It may be attended virtually with details to follow.
Memorial contributions may be made to Catholic Charities of Genesee Co. or St. Jude Children's Hospital.
Barb was born in the family home on Clement St. in Flint, Michigan on August 16, 1935, the youngest of thirteen children born to William and Louvina (Hewitt) Flynn. Barb graduated from St. Michael Catholic School, and then earned a registered nursing degree from Nazareth College Division of Nursing. On June 18, 1960, she married James Brophy, who preceded her in death on November 26, 2019. Barb was employed as an RN in various nursing homes in the Flint area and retired from Genesee Memorial Hospital in 1992. She was a volunteer at the Genesee Free Medical Clinic and the soup kitchen for many years, and always sponsored a family at Christmas. Barb was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church. She enjoyed genealogy, quilting, gardening, painting, trips to the casino and to her cottage in East Tawas. She especially enjoyed time with her large extended Irish family and her grandchildren.
Surviving are children, Beth Brophy (Tony), Julie McCullough (Jim), Dan Brophy, and Carol Myron (David);
Grandchildren, Danielle, Eleanor and Finnegan; Great-grandson, Knox;
Sisters-in-law, Cherrill Flynn, Joan Flynn, Mary Lou Szecsodi, Karen Stead, and Carol Yaklin;
Brothers-in-law, Robert Brophy and wife Vivian; Charles Roy
countless nieces, nephews, and godchildren.
Barb was also preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Richard, Fred, John, Bernard, Harold, Clare, and Dale Flynn, and her sisters Rita Siegel, Ruth Winfield, Irene Wills, Helen Keeler, and Elizabeth Gormley.
The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to Barb's nieces Teresa Pray and Toni Szecsodi of the Pray Family Care Home for their tender loving care and kindness to Barb during her stay with them.
