CHAPMAN, James (Jim) Kenneth passed away peacefully at home on May 27, 2023 with his wife Leslie (nee Way), daughter and son-in-law by his side. He was born October 16, 1952 to Shirley and Dean Chapman in Muskegon, Michigan. Jim and Leslie met at Michigan State University in 1972 and in 1980 they married and moved to Flushing.
Jim was a man of many talents and hobbies. He earned degrees in both Parks and Recreation and Psychology from MSU before finding his true calling as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist. Throughout his 20 years as a CRNA at Hurley Medical Center his kind, gentle manner and quiet humility, paired with his desire to help and care for others, made him well loved by colleagues, students and patients alike.
In 2000, Jim received a terminal cancer diagnosis. However, Jim was determined to see his daughter Emily grow up. Through his positive attitude, faith and strength, he defied the odds and perplexed doctors and medical teams everywhere for the next 23 years.
A prolific gardener, Jim was blessed with an incredible green thumb. He loved being outside and could often be found tending to his garden, which was a cacophony of vegetables and flowers. He was always happy to share tomatoes, peppers or fresh blooms with neighbors, friends and family.
Another of Jim’s passions was creating stained glass in his basement studio. His designs ranged from intricate lamps and large-scale window hangings to fun holiday decorations and night-lights for his great-niece and nephews, all of which are lovingly displayed in the homes of his family members.
His sense of humor and wit were well-loved by all. He was quick to share a funny pun, joke or silly poem no matter the occasion. Jim would regularly clip a funny comic from the Sunday paper to save and give to a friend or family member, often with a spirited retelling of the punchline. Jim was a devoted MSU sports fan and loved to cheer on his Spartans, win or lose.
Jim loved his family dearly and cherished his time with them. He was a fun-loving, kind and gentle man who is already greatly missed. He is preceded in death by his parents, Dean and Shirley Chapman, and father-in-law Gerald Way. Jim is survived by his wife Leslie, daughter Emily (Andrew) Steiger, brother Dave (Jacki) Chapman, mother-in-law Betty Way, sister-in-law Debbie (Tom) Pokora, brother-in-law Nelson (Amy) Way, niece Laurel Chapman, nephew Stephen (Celeste) Pokora, niece Sarah Chapman, niece Stephanie (Ben) Reed, nephew Joshua Way, nephew Ryan (Paisley) Way, and niece Jenna (Craig) Chandler.
The family would like to thank the Med/Surg ICU team at Hurley Medical Center and The Medical Team Hospice for their kindness, compassionate care and friendship to Jim and his family while he was in their care.
