John William “J.W.” Sifferman Jr., 92, passed away quietly at his home in Grand Blanc, MI on February 12.
Born July 28, 1929 in Flint, he was the second of three sons and first live birth of the late Laura Mae (Smith) Sifferman and John William Sifferman Sr. His family moved from Burton to a farm in rural Grand Blanc where they raised a herd of milk cows. Much of the farmland is still family owned.
While attending Grand Blanc High School, John played football, ran track, participated in school plays and was a talented saxophone player in the high school band before graduating in 1947. He attended college for two years before enlisting in the U.S. Air Force on Oct. 17, 1950.
John married his high school sweetheart Miriam Janette Pepper on December 22, 1951 in Grand Blanc. They moved to San Antonio where he proudly served at Randolph Air Force Base before being assigned duties in Japan during the Korea War. He attained the rank of Staff Sergeant and was honorably discharged October 16, 1954. For service to his country, he received the United Nations Service Medal for Korea, Korean Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and Good Conduct Medal.
Following completion of his service, he returned to Grand Blanc where he designed and built his home on family farmland and lived the balance of his life with his wife.
During his lifetime, John held many jobs including operating a Sunoco Service Station in Grand Blanc, working at Fisher Body where he was Union Foreman, driving car carriers for Complete Auto Transit, and selling homes as a licensed builder and realtor.
John enjoyed summer camping with his family as well as hunting and fishing. He organized baseball or touch football games with his and neighboring children. He was actively involved in 4-H with his children. He loved to sing, and often broke into song while driving. Following retirement, he loved designing houses.
John was the last of his childhood family, preceded in death by his parents and brother, Donald. He is survived by his loving wife Miriam of 70 years, his children David Lee (Janet), Jeanne Ann Grooms (Greg), Gary Allen (Kathy), Paul Duane (Carolyn), and Kay Marie Lasater (David), 13 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
