Gilbert A. "Bud" Thompson

Born: 10/11/1929
Died: 8/27/2023
Age: 93
Community: Flushing, MI

Thompson, Gilbert A. (Bud) of Flushing, age 93, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 27, 2023, at his home.

Bud was born in Flushing, Michigan on October 11, 1929, the son of George and Ruth (Freeman) Thompson. He married Florence “Elaine” McIntosh on July 30, 1954 at the Flushing United Methodist Church. She preceded him in death on December 21, 2020, following 66 years of marriage.

Bud proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from 1951 to 1953. He worked various jobs driving a truck throughout his life. Starting as a young boy, he delivered ice and pop with his dad. He loved to tell stories about his paper route, working at the A&P store, and growing up on the farm in Flushing. He drove for Flushing Redi-Mix from 1960 to 1989 and retired from Kurtz Concrete Co. in 1992, allowing him to enjoy his life-long hobbies of gardening, traveling, lapidary/faceting, wine making, and sailing. Bud was a hardworking father who enjoyed family Christmas parties and cookouts. He was always taking pictures, leaving us his lifetime in picture form. His easygoing nature made him a “kind” conversationalist, striking up conversations with complete strangers. He was a member of the Flushing Historical Society and loved talking about Flushing’s history. He was also a member of the Teamsters Local No 332. Bud was an avid gardener and enjoyed sharing his fruits and vegetables with friends and neighbors, as well as the North End Soup Kitchen and Carriage Town Ministries. Everyone looked forward to the garden harvest, especially the Charleston Grey watermelons and the Howden pumpkins. And who could forget the spring “harvest” of dandelions to make homemade dandelion wine? He always felt very fortunate to have traveled the world and to winter in Florida. He was very much loved and will be truly missed by all who knew him.

Bud is survived by his children Brian Thompson, Greg Thompson, Christie and husband Robert Watkins, Vickie Thompson, Denise and husband David Redumski; grandchildren, Bradley, Philip, Alanna, Steven, Jeanette, Joshua, Christopher, Melissa, and Mindy; 13 great-grandchildren; siblings Donald and wife Iris Thompson, Joyce Leech, Lois Swearingen, and many loving nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son Gerald and wife Jeanean Thompson, and great-granddaughter Arley Gilaine Melefsky.

A service will be held on Friday, September 8, 2023, at 12 pm at the Flushing United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends from 11 am until the time of service.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, Boys Town, or Flushing Historical Society.
